Intel's most failed processor ever! The first generation of abortion, 10nm, suddenly appeared

author:Hardware chit-chatter

There are countless processor products in Intel's history, some are very successful, some are very failures, and to say which one is the most unsuccessful, many people may think of the Pentium 4, which made the Intel CEO kneel in public, but it was at least released and listed, and the first generation of Cannon Lake, which uses the 10nm process, was almost completely aborted.

In fact, at the beginning of 2018, Intel announced that Cannon Lake had begun to ship, but it was never officially released, and there was only a low-power mobile version of i3-8121U that was disclosed, nominally belonging to the eighth generation of Core, 2 cores and 4 threads, L3 cache 4MB, main frequency 2.2-3.2GHz, thermal design power consumption 15W, no core graphics.

There are also very few products that use it, only the Intel Crimson Canyon NUC mini machine and the Lenovo IdeaPad educational tablet are public, and the former was only sold for a year before being withdrawn from the market.

In fact, there is also an ultra-low-power m3-8114Y, but it is little known and is not included in the Intel ARK database.

According to third-party information, it is also 2 cores and 4 threads, with a main frequency of only 1.5-2.2GHz, no core display, and a thermal design power consumption of only 5W.

Now we see an Intel development board, and the processor on it is this m3-8114Y, which BGA1392 integrated package and consists of three chiplets.

Among them, the largest part in the middle is the CPU, 70.52 square millimeters, the smaller one on the left is the chipset, 46.17 square millimeters, and the smallest on the right is the McIVR (Multi-chip Integrated Voltage Regulator), which is used to control the voltage of the other two chips.

There are also Samsung 8GB LPDDR4-3733 memory (four), SK hynix 128MB eMMC storage, Intel 9560 Wi-Fi 5 wireless network card, and many development and debugging interfaces and slots.

Interestingly, there is also a stick figure image of Pokémon Meow in the lower left corner of the motherboard, which is really leisurely and elegant.
