Summer-limited romantic fireflies

At present, it has entered the best viewing period

Fireflies from the South China National Botanical Garden

The best time to see them is from May to June

It is more concentrated in the grass in front of the cycad garden

The best time to see it is between 19:30 and 20:30 in the evening

  • If you want to use a professional camera to shoot fireflies, it is recommended to arrive at the firefly viewing area before 19 o'clock, observe the surrounding environment while it is still dark, choose a good location, and adjust the machine.
  • If you are just watching or shooting with your mobile phone, it is recommended to arrive at the firefly viewing site before 19:30. If you are stuck in the park at 19:30 at the cut-off time, there is a high chance that you have missed the best time to see the fireflies when you walk from the entrance to the firefly viewing area.

It has been observed that when it is not raining, fireflies begin to appear every night between 19:15 and 19:40 at nightfall, and the specific time varies depending on the sunset time and the day's weather, temperature and other environmental factors, lasting for half an hour to an hour. The higher the temperature, the later it gets, and the shorter it lasts.

Fireflies prefer hot and humid weather, and if it rains that day, there are theoretically the highest number of sunny and hot nights after the rain. If it rains in the evening and the air is too humid, the number of fireflies may be smaller.

Precautions

In order to better protect fireflies and the environment they live in, please observe the following rules when filming and sightseeing:

  • When shooting fireflies, manually turn off the focus and flash of your camera and mobile phone, and do not use auto mode. If the light is too bright, it will interfere with the glow of the fireflies, so that they cannot see each other's calling;
  • During the tour and shooting, please refrain from stepping on the soil or entering the path of the firefly viewing area. Fireflies' eggs, larvae and pupae need soft and moist soil, and human trampling on the soil will affect the survival of fireflies, causing many juvenile fireflies to die;
  • Don't get too close and don't catch fireflies. It can compress the living space of fireflies and interfere with their courtship activities.
  • Please spray mosquito repellent and other potions as little as possible, and it is best to replace them with physical insect control methods such as long sleeves and long pants to avoid harming fireflies.
  • Please refrain from making loud noises during the firefly viewing period, as human voices may interfere with firefly activities. Parents are requested to take good care of their children and do not chase and fight at the scene. If the child is unwilling to stay for a long time and is crying, the on-site staff will ask the parents and children to leave the firefly viewing area temporarily.
  • There are no street lights in and around the firefly viewing area, please pay attention to safety, and if you encounter any problems, please ask for help from on-site staff and volunteers. Please leave the park in time after watching the fireflies, and do not linger.
