How to make autonomous driving run out of "acceleration"?

author:Shenzhen Satellite TV Deepvision News

Autonomous driving technology is rapidly evolving and is becoming more and more embedded in people's lives. Recently, the Shenzhen Municipal Transportation Bureau officially issued the "Shenzhen Intelligent Connected Vehicle Road Test and Demonstration Application Sixth Batch of Open Road Catalogue", up to now, the total mileage of Shenzhen intelligent networked vehicle road test has reached 944 kilometers, including 67 kilometers of high-speed roads.

What kind of help can Shenzhen's new opening road provide for the development of related enterprises? With the extension of the test road, how has the company updated in terms of technology and equipment? To build a national benchmark for the high-quality development of intelligent networked vehicles, how does Shenzhen need to run out of "acceleration"? Shenzhen Satellite TV's "Evening Report" column invites industry insiders and relevant experts to interpret.

More than 900 kilometers of autonomous driving roads are open in Shenzhen

According to the "Catalogue of the Sixth Batch of Open Roads for Road Testing and Demonstration Applications of Intelligent Connected Vehicles in Shenzhen", there are a total of 43 roads for road testing and demonstration applications of intelligent networked vehicles opened this time, with a total mileage of about 106 kilometers, all of which are located in Bao'an District, involving four areas: Baozhong, Xin'an, Huizhan and Shajing. In the selection of road sections, factors such as industrial layout, road traffic environment, facilities and traffic flow in the jurisdiction are comprehensively considered, so that the road network can drive the development of the area in a continuous manner.

Shenzhen's autonomous driving road continues to expand and extend, which is closely related to the rapid development of the intelligent networked vehicle industry. The intelligent networked automobile company in Bao'an District, its self-developed vehicle wireless communication OTA test system is running, through which the signal performance and operation of the vehicle can be comprehensively tested, and the last big test before the intelligent networked vehicle is put into operation on the road.

The intelligent networked automobile industry is one of the key development directions of Shenzhen's "20+8" industry. According to the data, in 2023, the added value of Shenzhen's intelligent networked automobile industry will be 76.31 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 38.2%. At present, there are more than 12,000 autonomous driving-related companies in mainland China, and Shenzhen ranks first with more than 1,300 companies. In 2022, Shenzhen took the lead in promulgating the mainland's first intelligent networked vehicle management regulations - "Shenzhen Special Economic Zone Intelligent Networked Vehicle Management Regulations"; In August last year, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's only intelligent networked professional test site was put into operation in Pingshan, and at the end of January this year, Bao'an District launched an unmanned commercial pilot of intelligent networked vehicles, becoming the first central urban area in the country to carry out an unmanned commercial pilot.

In order to better promote the development of the intelligent networked automobile industry, Shenzhen has launched a series of support policies in recent years, and plans to reach 200 billion yuan in operating income of Shenzhen's intelligent networked automobile industry by 2025, forming a strategic echelon of more than 10 enterprises with revenue of more than 10 billion yuan and more than 20 enterprises with revenue of more than 1 billion yuan. By the end of 2025, China will take the lead in realizing "1,000 vehicles per city", build a leading intelligent networked vehicle industry cluster in China, and build a national benchmark for the high-quality development of intelligent networked vehicles.

The expansion of the test road accelerates the technological breakthrough of car companies

Improve autonomous driving safety

Gao Yang, director of strategic planning of autonomous driving company Pony.ai, said that the company has accumulated nearly 30 million kilometers of autonomous driving road test mileage in the four first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, which can easily cope with some extreme scenarios such as rain, snow, sand and dust, and ensure that the technology has strong generalization capabilities.

"In the future, for some special scenarios in Shenzhen, such as left-turn intersections, alternating intersections and long tunnels, we will invest large R&D and testing resources to solve them, so as to achieve fully unmanned autonomous driving in the core urban area of Shenzhen." Gao Yang said.

Intelligent networked vehicles in many places "start running" in the whole city

Unmanned taxis and other industrial chains welcome new opportunities

According to incomplete statistics, in addition to Shenzhen, there are currently 50 cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou that have introduced pilot demonstration policies for autonomous driving, and continue to accelerate the expansion of application scenarios. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, by the end of 2023, a total of 17 national-level test demonstration zones, 7 Internet of Vehicles pilot areas, and 16 pilot cities for the coordinated development of smart cities and intelligent networked vehicles will be built across the country, and more than 22,000 kilometers of test demonstration roads will be opened.

The introduction of a series of national policies, such as the Notice on Carrying out the Pilot Work on the Access and Road Access of Intelligent Connected Vehicles and the Guidelines for Transportation Safety Services for Autonomous Vehicles (Trial), has also pressed the "acceleration button" for the commercialization of autonomous driving.

In August last year, Toyota China, GAC Toyota and Pony.ai established a joint venture to deploy driverless taxis, with a planned investment of more than 1 billion yuan. In this regard, Gao Yang revealed, "The goal is to make our Robotaxi (self-driving taxi) realize large-scale unmanned commercialization in first-tier cities through joint front-end mass production with OEMs." ”

On May 8 this year, according to the latest report from China Daily, Tesla proposed to land "driverless taxis" in China. In this regard, the Chinese government may support it to test and demonstrate in China.

Shenzhen leads the country in the field of autonomous driving

Shao Yuan, deputy general manager of Shenzhen Urban Transportation Planning and Design Research Center Co., Ltd., believes that Shenzhen has three advantages in the field of autonomous driving development:

First, industrial advantages. Shenzhen is home to companies such as Huawei, BYD, and Tencent, and the upstream and downstream industrial chain of intelligent networking is very complete, covering a complete industrial chain layout from vehicle manufacturing, cloud control platform, AI algorithm, etc.;

The second is the legislative advantage. Shenzhen is the first in the country to complete the legislation and promulgation of the first local management regulations for intelligent networking, providing a very inclusive and open policy environment.

The third is technical advantages. Shenzhen is comprehensively promoting the construction and operation of intelligent network infrastructure, and is expected to form a city-level model of national pilot demonstration in the future.

Shao Yuan introduced that at present, the five national ministries and commissions are promoting a new round of pilot work on vehicle-road-cloud integration across the country, which will play a strategic guiding role in the development of intelligent networked unmanned driving. At present, Shenzhen is actively applying for the first batch of pilot cities, which is expected to be the first demonstration at the national level.

How to build a national benchmark for the high-quality development of intelligent networked vehicles? Shao Yuan suggested, "On the basis of Shenzhen's unified digital space base, a standardized construction and operation mode of new intelligent network infrastructure should be formed, and a good model for the country's multi-mode intelligent network demonstration in terms of unmanned logistics vehicles, unmanned electric vehicles, and unmanned cars." ”

Evening Observations:

Once upon a time, car self-driving was just an idea. Nowadays, with policy support, mature supply chain and technological progress, autonomous driving technology is on the eve of large-scale commercialization and application. As the focus of China's autonomous driving policy shifts from encouraging the expansion of road tests and pilots in the past to supporting mass production and commercial operation of models, Shenzhen, which already has a first-mover advantage, needs to continue to accelerate in terms of iterative upgrading of autonomous driving technology and business model innovation.
