The reporter learned from the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the "China Sky Eye" FAST recently discovered six neutral hydrogen galaxies about 5 billion light-years away from the Earth, which is the farthest batch of neutral hydrogen galaxies directly detected by mankind so far. The relevant results were published online in the international academic journal "Astrophysical Journal Newsletter" on the 10th.

According to reports, hydrogen is the earliest element formed in the universe and usually exists in the form of neutral hydrogen. Neutral hydrogen is widely present in different periods of the universe and is one of the best tracers for the distribution of matter at different scales. The detection and study of neutral hydrogen is of great significance for understanding the properties of dark matter and dark energy, and interpreting the formation and evolution of galaxies. Previously, more than 40,000 samples of neutral hydrogen galaxies had been discovered by China Sky Eye.

In this study, the ultra-deep field survey project led by Peng Bo, a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories, gave full play to the high sensitivity of the "China Sky Eye" and the large field of view of the 19-beam receiver to carry out deep "blind search" for long-distance and faint neutral hydrogen galaxies, and discovered six neutral hydrogen galaxies about 5 billion light-years away from the Earth.

"We have also cooperated with a number of teams at home and abroad to comprehensively use the multi-band observation data of multiple astronomical telescopes to successfully find the optical counterparts of these six long-range neutral hydrogen galaxies." Peng Bo said that the "China Sky Eye" provides us with a new way to detect distant neutral hydrogen galaxies.

The team also estimated the density of these neutral hydrogen galaxies. "One of these six neutral hydrogen galaxies has the largest neutral hydrogen mass to date." Dr. Xi Hongwei, the first author of the paper and the National Astronomical Observatories, said that as the "China Sky Eye" makes more new discoveries in the field of neutral hydrogen, we are expected to discover more mysteries of the universe.
