Torqeedo orange propellers to be 'green' with recycled ocean plastic

author:Boat Harbor

The propeller, the traditional power plant, is on its way to a new journey of the "Green Revolution". A special team of engineers is testing a prototype made from recycled ocean plastic. They are not only exploring the boundaries of technology, but also making a green commitment to the future of the planet.

The company is determined to achieve three ambitious goals: first, to significantly reduce the negative impact of its products on the environment, so that technology and ecology can coexist in harmony; the second is to help build a circular economy system for waste plastics, so that waste can be reborn; The third is to verify the feasibility and reliability of highly recycled plastic parts and products in practical applications, and set a green benchmark for the industry.

According to authoritative estimates, up to 14 million tons of waste plastic inexorably pour into the world's waterways every year, and eventually become a heavy burden on the oceans. These plastics not only entangle marine animals, but also decompose into microplastics that are difficult to remove, quietly invading our lives and polluting the common home of humans and nature.

Faced with this serious challenge, Torqeedo stepped up to the plate and assembled a strong senior engineering team. They are tasked with exploring alternative materials to further reduce the environmental impact of recreational and commercial marine products.

The new Torqeedo Orange Propeller will be available within a year

They are carefully testing recycled ocean PET and PP plastic pellets, which are considered to be the jewels of the environmental world, and are estimated to reduce the CO2 impact of raw materials by more than 80%. Thanks to rigorous processes and cutting-edge recycling equipment, the quality of these pellets is almost as high as virgin plastic, giving them a new lease of life.

Florian Deger, the project's leader, said: "Typically, when integrating new materials, we take a cautious approach and start small, perhaps with only 10 or 20 percent recycled content. However, our team has the courage to take on challenges and aspire to excellence. That's why we decided to take the plunge and prototype our propellers using 100% recycled ocean plastic. Excitingly, in the first round of environmental and stress testing, these prototypes far exceeded expectations, surpassing all established benchmarks. ”

After a series of meticulous tweaks, Florian Deger confidently revealed: "Next, we will set out to build a prototype of our next brother, Torqeedo Orange. These prototypes will remain highly similar to the propellers we currently use, but with very different connotations. If the next round of testing goes as expected, the first Torqeedo products infused with ocean plastic will be on the market within a year. ”

In the past, many manufacturers stuck to the old ways and had reservations about using recycled materials, trapped by the stereotype of inferior materials. However, this has changed with the rapid development of recycling technology. Torqeedo believes that today we are well positioned to build a circular economy for plastics that will not compromise the performance and durability of our products, but will instead inject more green energy into the planet.

Torqeedo is no stranger to getting involved in projects that help clean and protect water resources. At the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, they began to work with Ocean Bottle to take an important step towards reducing plastic pollution. This cross-border collaboration not only demonstrates Torqeedo's strong commitment to environmental protection, but also demonstrates its brand image as a positive and innovative brand. The bottles were distributed one by one to each of the guests attending the Düsseldorf Boat Show

Together with three global partners, Ocean Bottle has been able to prevent more than one billion plastic bottles from flowing into the blue ocean by actively carrying out plastic collection operations in areas hardest hit by plastic pollution. For every ocean bottle sold, 11.368 kilograms of ocean plastic are recycled, which is equivalent to the accumulation of 1,000 plastic bottles.

Fabian Bez, President of Torqeedo, praised the achievement: "These are significant initiatives that have allowed us to stop more than 1.2 million plastic bottles from traveling to the ocean. He went on to say fondly: "Respect for nature and the environment on which human beings depend has always been a core value of Torqeedo. If we do not intervene, there will be a shocking future in which plastic waste in the ocean will surpass the total weight of fish by 2050. ”

Fabian Bez further elaborated: "Incorporating ocean plastic into our products is not only an environmental commitment, but also an important step towards building a more sustainable maritime industry. We are committed to promoting a circular plastics economy that gives used plastic a new lease of life as a valuable resource. It is only when the recycled materials have a promising market that collecting waste plastics for recycling can be truly economically viable. We are proud to be leading the way in this circular economy revolution and contributing to the future of our planet. ”

Building a circular plastics economy

"That's why we've created a new senior engineering team at Torqeedo dedicated to bringing the power of innovation to our products." He concluded. "Every step we take to reduce the environmental and climate impact of our yachts improves our people and the natural environment, and above all to defend the yachting lifestyle we love.

Dreger says affectionately, "The moment I held the prototype in my hand, it was like touching the hope of the future. We know we're we're we're weeding out plastic bottles and pollution, and restoring clarity and serenity to the waters we love to explore. This is not only a respect for nature, but also a kind of adherence and sublimation of lifestyle. ”
