How does science and technology affect the process of human civilization and how does it promote the continuous progress of human civilization?
On May 1, the "100,000 High-tech Whys" lecture series was held on the second floor of Pingshan Library in Shenzhen, and Liu Qingsong, chair professor of the Department of Marine Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology, shared the theme of "How does science and technology shape civilization?", vividly analyzing how science and technology empower the development and progress of human civilization for more than 100 readers.
The "100,000 High-tech Whys" lecture series is wholly sponsored by Wanhui Hardware (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., a national high-tech enterprise in Pingshan District, which is the first time that the Pingshan District Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau has introduced social funds to participate in the beneficial exploration of public cultural services, which not only stimulates the interest of young people in science, but also provides enterprises with a display platform for scientific and technological leadership and innovation capabilities, and achieves good results of win-win and reciprocity among the government, enterprises and society.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Liu Qingsong used a schematic diagram of the earth to show plate tectonic movements, and discussed the characteristics of civilization development in the dimensions of "what is the earth's magnetic field, how to study the evolution of the ancient earth's magnetic field, and the global climate background in the past 15,000 years", and then talked about the roots and effects of the scientific revolution in terms of the Western scientific revolution and the industrial revolution. He believed that demand was the root of scientific development, and that by the end of the 19th century, science had become an important part of Western society, so much so that it changed the way of thinking and behavior of human beings, and promoted the rapid development of human society.
When it comes to future education and society, Professor Liu Qingsong believes that science and technology are the "power pump" that drives development in the 21st century, which will continue to rewrite contemporary civilization and affect human life. At present, the world is facing unprecedented changes, and human society is also facing various challenges, such as the scientific and technological revolution is changing our way of life, so the traditional education model is difficult to meet the needs of today's changing society, which requires education to develop in harmony with the times and society. However, the scientific and technological revolution is far from developing to the stage of completely changing the thinking of traditional human civilization.
Professor Liu Qingsong used popular and humorous language to talk about high-tech in various fields, and the atmosphere was warm. In the interactive session, readers of all sizes asked questions enthusiastically, full of curiosity and expectation about the blue planet we live in, "If artificial intelligence robots become 'refined', then how should we humans get along with them?" "What will happen if the earth's magnetic field is gone?" "How do we understand the world with a scientific attitude?...... Professor Liu Qingsong answered all questions and issued a popular science book list for young readers: "The Adventures of Carbon Treasure", "Geological Stories on the Long March", and "100,000 High-tech Whys" (Volume 1 and 2), hoping that everyone will further explore the mystery and fun of science.
