East Coast Province (1815-1817)

The Banda Oriental is an area historically located east of the Uruguay River and north of the Río de la Plata, roughly equivalent to parts of present-day Uruguay, the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The eastern bank is also the easternmost territory of the Viceroyalty of La Plata. Both the Spanish and Portuguese empires claimed sovereignty over the east coast. After decades of disputes, in 1777, the Spanish Empire and the Portuguese Empire signed the First Treaty of San Idefontso. According to the treaty, the southern part of the east bank was assigned to the Spanish Viceroyalty of La Plata, and the northern part of the east bank was assigned to the Portuguese Empire.

Cisplatin, also known as Sisplatin, was a province of the Brazilian Empire. After the Portuguese occupied the east coast, West Spratin was established in 1821. After the independence of the Brazilian Empire, the Sisplatin remained in the Brazilian Empire. In 1828, the Brazilian Empire allowed Sispratin to become independent, and Sispratin was renamed Uruguay at the same time.
