SGS helped ZTE pass two SBTi inspections and obtain CDP "A" scores

Recently, ZTE and SGS have taken a key step in the process of actively responding to the global climate change challenge, officially passing the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) short-term target of 1.5°C and long-term net-zero target, and was ranked on the "A List" in the 2023 annual rating results released by the international authoritative environmental non-profit organization CDP (Center for Global Environmental Information). ZTE has become a large-scale ICT technology company that has passed two SBTi inspections and has been rated as CDP Grade A for climate change.

Climate change has become an urgent reality that requires urgent action. The information and communication technology (ICT) industry itself is characterized by efficient, clean, green, low-carbon, and sustainable development, and through technologies such as high-speed connectivity, mass storage, and intelligent computing, it can improve the efficiency of resource allocation and production and life for the whole society, while helping customers in thousands of industries to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction.

As the world's leading provider of integrated communication and information solutions, ZTE actively responds to the international trend of carbon reduction and the national "3060" dual carbon policy, and has formulated a green and low-carbon strategy based on digital intelligence technology innovation since 2021, building a digital boulevard from four aspects: "green enterprise operation, green supply chain, green ICT digital intelligence base, and green industry empowerment", to promote energy conservation and carbon reduction internally and empower the industry externally.

Establish ambitious, systematic, and high-standard goals

In September 2023, ZTE submitted to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) the setting of greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and long-term net-zero targets based on the 1.5°C pathway. Specifically, by 2030, Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions will be reduced by 52% compared to the 2021 base year, Scope 3 product carbon emissions per unit performance will be reduced by 52% (physical strength method) without increasing the total amount, and carbon neutrality will be achieved in its own operations by 2040 and carbon neutrality as a whole by 2050 to achieve net-zero emissions.

Adhere to the concept of green and low-carbon

Deep integration into end-to-end operations

By focusing on high-consumption facilities such as R&D laboratories, production lines, and central air conditioning, ZTE practices all-round low-carbon operations, reduces resource consumption and environmental impact, and increases the use of self-built photovoltaic new energy with integrated photovoltaic energy storage. In terms of green supply chain, green and low-carbon will be incorporated into the whole process of supplier management, carbon emission models will be built to promote collaborative emission reduction in the upstream and downstream of the supply chain, and in terms of green digital intelligence base, with the goal of "cleanest energy, ultimate ICT, and most intelligent network", we will focus on improving energy efficiency of products and build an end-to-end "zero" carbon network.

ZTE has made remarkable achievements in sustainable development. In 2023, the company's overall carbon emissions decreased by 9.7% year-on-year, of which the carbon emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 & 2) decreased by 3.0% year-on-year, and all indirect (Scope 3) carbon emissions from upstream and downstream decreased by 9.8% year-on-year. Cumulative self-operation (Scope 1&2) carbon emissions decreased by 15.6% year-on-year, the total energy efficiency per unit economic intensity of the company's energy consumption increased by 18.1%, and the newly installed photovoltaic power generation capacity of self-built and self-consumed increased by 700%.

Thanks to its outstanding contributions to green emission reduction such as "strategic guidance, culture first, energy conservation and carbon reduction in management and technology, and green industry empowerment", ZTE has been highly recognized by the Global Environmental Information Research Center (CDP), an international authoritative environmental non-profit organization, and has been listed on the 2023 CDP "A-level list". Second, ZTE has long been committed to building a new generation of digital infrastructure through end-to-end green solutions, reducing energy consumption per bit with technological innovation, and helping global operators save 10 billion kWh of electricity per year through advanced technologies such as smart photovoltaic power generation, hydrogen fuel cells, liquid cooling, and AI energy saving.

SGS is the Chinese mainland partner of CDP "climate change" and "science-based targets (SBT)" of SBTi, and officially joined the United Nations Global Compact in 2023. As a green and low-carbon strategic partner of ZTE, SGS and ZTE continue to explore the path of green, low-carbon and high-quality development, and assist ZTE in deepening the green and low-carbon transformation and improving the level of ESG governance.

In the future, SGS and ZTE will continue to promote the green and sustainable development of the global economy, and contribute to the response to climate change and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
