Protect Hu Di ● Ouyang Yi

On the Long March, Comrade Hu Di served as the head of the reconnaissance section of the headquarters. When crossing the grassland, he was poisoned by eating mushrooms due to lack of food, and when he was delirious, he scolded the words that had been accumulated in his chest to be dissatisfied with Zhang Guotao, saying that Zhang Guotao was a warlord and a fascist!

The instructor sent by Zhang Guotao beside him reported his scolding to Zhang Guotao. Zhang Guotao was annoyed and ashamed, scolded him as a "counter-revolutionary", canceled his orderly, and let him march with his own baggage. After his serious illness, his body was weak, and he fell behind every day, and he was embarrassed. The Fifth Legion served as a rearguard and often contained him.

★ Hu Di (March 10, 1905 – September 1935) was the head of the Reconnaissance Section of the State Political Security Bureau

Hu Di and I are very familiar with him, and we worked together when we were in the Security Bureau of the Political Bureau of the People's Republic of China, and our relationship is extraordinary. One day, when he fell behind, I met him, and when I asked, I realized that it was Zhang Guotao who corrected him. I saw that he was very embarrassed, with a thin face and weak muscles, so I decided to leave him in our security bureau to walk with us, so that we could take care of and protect him. But he is from the headquarters, and I want to keep him, with the approval of the head of the headquarters.

So, I rode forward and reported to Commander-in-Chief Zhu and Commander-in-Chief Liu Bocheng. When I recounted what happened to Hu Di and our plans, and when Commander-in-Chief Zhu was expressing his embarrassment, Commander-in-Chief Liu Bocheng spoke: "Alas, Comrade Ouyang Yi! The commander-in-chief and I are both mud bodhisattvas crossing the river, and it is difficult to protect ourselves! I think you should watch and handle this matter!"

The commander-in-chief then said, "Yes, you can do it!"

In this way, this matter cannot be ordered by the commander-in-chief and the commander-in-chief Liu. At that time, I realized that the situation of the commander-in-chief and Commander-in-Chief Liu was very bad, Zhang Guotao was rectifying them, and they were cautious everywhere and could not let Zhang Guotao catch any tricks.

I couldn't embarrass Commander-in-Chief Zhu, so I went back to the corps headquarters and reported the matter of leaving Hu Di to the corps commander Dong Zhentang and political commissar Zeng Risan, and they basically had no objection, so I secretly left Hu Di in the security bureau to act with us, and I often went to see him in the tent where he lived and sent him something to eat. He gained a sense of security, recovered quickly, and was in good spirits, and often introduced the young comrades of our bureau to his work experience in security.

Zhang Guotao ordered the Security Bureau of the Headquarters to find out Hu Di's whereabouts, and after checking and finding out Hu Di's tent, Zhang Guotao ordered him to be arrested.

One day, I went to a meeting of the Legion Society, and the head of the security bureau at the headquarters arrested Hu Di. The comrades of our bureau quickly ran to the corps headquarters to report to me. I immediately rode back to the tent of the Security Bureau and convened a meeting to study what to do. Some comrades advocated catching up and snatching it back. I don't feel right. As soon as we chase him, his captors will immediately shoot him to death, and they will clash with us, which will hinder the overall situation.

After much thought, I immediately rode to the headquarters and reported to Commander-in-Chief Zhu, hoping to try to rescue him. After hearing this, President Liu said worriedly: "Zhang Guotao is going to poison him!"

The commander-in-chief frowned and did not say a word for a long time. Seeing that he was in a difficult situation and that it was inconvenient for me to take rescue action, I withdrew. Later, Commander-in-Chief Zhu went to visit him in the place where Hu Di was being held, sent him something, and comforted him, but he could no longer be rescued.

After Hu Di was captured, he wrote me a letter from his captors. He said that he was imprisoned in the communications camp, and that General Political Commissar Zhang had talked to him and treated him well, and that his blanket was better than mine and that he wanted to give it to me. Reading this, I understood his real situation. He didn't dare to write about Zhang Guotao's abuse of him, but he already understood that his days were numbered, so he wanted to give me a blanket. I was embarrassed to write back to him, saying that he needed the blanket himself the most and that he should not give it to me. He also asked someone to bring him a yak leg.

Later, I heard that during the march, Hu Di couldn't walk, and the Headquarters Security Bureau reported to Zhang Guotao. Zhang Guotao then ordered the chief of the General Security Bureau to "deal with it". In Zhang Guotao's vocabulary, "processing" means "execution". The leaders of the Security Bureau understood this, so they ordered the secretary general of the General Security Bureau to ask the captain of the security team to take a few soldiers to strangle Hu Di with a rope and bury him hastily by the roadside ditch before the troops camped in Songgang. It was reported to Zhang Guotao afterwards.

The Central Military Commission of the Central Revolution issued the "Instructions on Our Army's Speedy Crossing of the Jinsha River and the Establishment of a Soviet Zone in Western Sichuan" at Lukoushao in Xundian County, pointing out: "As a result of the maneuver over the past two months, our field army has obtained favorable conditions for moving westward, and the general pursuit of the enemy is already behind our flank, but the enemy has concentrated more than 70 regiments of troops to pursue us, and it is no longer convenient for us to carry out a major combat maneuver in the present area. On the other hand, there is emptiness on both sides of the Jinsha River, and the central authorities' decision in the past to transfer the field army to western Sichuan and establish a Soviet base area is now possible. Therefore, "our field army should take advantage of the favorable opportunity of the present day to strive to quickly cross the Jinsha River, move to western Sichuan, destroy the enemy, and establish a base area in the Soviet area." After the telegram was issued, the Central Military Commission of the Central Revolution made specific arrangements, with Liu Bocheng, chief of the General Staff, as the advance commander of the river crossing, to form a temporary command center for crossing the river to give unified command to the whole army to cross the river, and the Red Army troops marched to the Jinsha River by three routes. The specific arrangements were: The 1st Army Corps seized the Yuanmou Longjiedu; the 3rd Army Corps seized the Luquan Hongmen Crossing; the cadres and regiments seized the Luquan Kyaukpingdu; and the 5th Army Corps took cover behind the palace along the route of the Central Military Commission column.

The Red 5th Army Corps and the Military Commission Column were the central columns, which advanced through Lukoujiao, Zhongmaichang, Lutucun, Kelang, Lelang, Dashiqiao, Gengjiacun, Laoshijia, Shibanhe, and Madian. The regiment marched 100 miles a day and continued to advance westward, replenishing 50 or 60 new soldiers. The headquarters of the corps was stationed in New Street.
