On April 23, the unveiling ceremony of Yuan Daoxian's Scientist Spirit Education Base and the establishment of the propaganda group was held in Southwest University.
Yuan Daoxian, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Weiguo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Southwest University, and other relevant leaders, guests, teachers and student representatives attended the ceremony.
According to reports, Yuan Daoxian, professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Geographical Sciences of Southwest University, is an internationally renowned geologist, hydrogeologist and karst scientist, who was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in November 1991, and is currently the director of the Academic Committee of the United Nations International Karst Research Center, the president of the Guangxi Development Strategy Research Association, and a member of the Academic Committee of the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Karst Environment.
For more than 40 years, the research on karst environment led by Academician Yuan Daoxian has formed unique research characteristics in the process of solving various problems of engineering geology, hydrogeology, ecological environment and regional development in karst areas. He proposed a new theory of karst morphological assemblage and karst dynamics, which not only put the research of continental karst at the forefront of international academics, but also promoted the global research of karst.
During the event, Yuan Daoxian, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhang Weiguo, secretary of the Party Committee of Southwest University, jointly unveiled the base. At the same time, in order to give full play to the role of the base in ideal and belief education, patriotism education and popular science education, a base propaganda group composed of 22 teachers and students from Southwest University and its affiliated middle schools and affiliated primary schools was also formally established.
According to reports, Yuan Daoxian's scientist spirit education base is located in Southwest University, with the main content of publicizing the scientific deeds, academic ideas and scientist spirit of Academician Yuan Daoxian, consisting of karst science exhibition venues and karst field observation and research stations, including Southwest University Astronomical and Geology Museum, Southwest University Geography and Culture Park, Jinfoshan National Field Science Observation and Research Station and other base units, with a construction area of about 5,000 square meters. In 2023, the base was successfully approved as a national scientist spirit education base.
On the same day, 91-year-old academician Yuan Daoxian visited the base with the participants and shared with everyone his teaching and research life in Southwest University and the moving story of his past scientific research.
At the same time, Academician Yuan Daoxian also sent a message to young students to continue to work hard to do a good job in scientific research. "First of all, we must be curious, ask why we should ask for various phenomena in the natural world, and at the same time be good at observing various phenomena and novel things in the natural world, and understand the endogenous laws in them, and we must also be good at serving the people and society with the results of these observations and scientific research, and make greater contributions to the society. ”
Zhang Weiguo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Southwest University, said that in the next step, the school will give full play to the role of Yuan Daoxian's scientist spirit education base, carefully carry out the propaganda activities of the scientist spirit, actively promote the spirit of scientists into the campus, into the classroom, and into the mind, and guide students to strengthen their ideals and beliefs, build a solid scientific dream, and serve the country with sincerity.
