According to the Daily Mail, Donna Ventura, a woman in the United States, died less than two weeks after eating sushi.

Her kidneys and liver had completely failed and she was on a ventilator at Bozeman Health hospital, where she had been battling raw mushroom poisoning for 13 days.

Donna was one of 51 seriously ill diners at Dave's Sushi and one of two who died from eating a special morel sushi roll.

Morel mushrooms are generally considered edible, and the morels used at Dave's sushi restaurant are imported from China and all tests on their surface for pesticides and other toxins have been negative.

Investigators did, though, find that people who were sick ate raw mushrooms, while people who ate cooked mushrooms were fine.

After consuming sushi, Donna was lifted into an ambulance, and in the hospital, she suffered a cardiac arrest and was in extreme danger, the report said.

Donna is in the intensive care unit, connected to a ventilator because she can't breathe on her own.

It is reported that it was the toxins in the mushroom that caused her liver and kidneys to fail.

The investigation found that Donna ate "morels", an ingredient that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, which can lead to inflammation and damage to organs. Subsequently, the compounds produced by the ingredients can cause direct damage to the cells of the kidneys and liver, disrupting their ability to clean the blood, and destroying red blood cells, leading to inflammation and exhaustion.

The Montana and Gallatin County Health Departments completed an investigation and found that between March 28 and April 17, 2023, a total of 50 people fell ill after eating morels at Dave's Sushi Restaurant. Four people, including Donna, were hospitalized.

Local health authorities also found nearly 20 other violations at the sushi restaurant, including unsafe temperatures in raw fish samples and problems with the restaurant's dishwasher.

In restaurants, mushrooms are eaten raw, marinated in a cold liquid, but not cooked.

The toxicity of morels has been reported to be uncommon, but not unheard of. In the past 15 years, there have been about 150 reports of poisoning caused by morels in the United States.

When enjoying Japanese food, you must pay attention to distinguish the ingredients, and remember not to eat undercooked morels or other suspicious "mushrooms" when you see them!

However, although the pre-made dishes are delicious and convenient, there are women who have been paralyzed from the neck down due to the consumption of pre-made canned soup.

According to the Daily Mail, 23-year-old Claudia de Albuquerque Celada is a skier. After consuming a pre-made canned soup once, she struggled with deadly bacteria.

Her friends say it was the pre-made canned soup that caused her tragedy.

Twenty-four hours after drinking the canned soup, Claudia reportedly became paralyzed and unable to move her muscles and was kept on a ventilator.

Two weeks later, doctors learned through tests that Claudia had botulism.

It is an infection that attacks the body's nerve tissue and affects only 100 Americans each year.

The health department agreed with Claudia's friend that the canned soup was the source of infection.

Professionals say botulinum toxin can grow when food is not stored properly, and this is most commonly seen in pre-made canned foods. Botulinum toxin infection is not contagious and poses no threat to the general population.

According to Claudia's sister, 15 days after buying the canned soup, Claudia served it as dinner. That night, "my sister began to feel sick" and experienced symptoms of shortness of breath, blurred vision, and dizziness.

When the paramedics arrived at her residence, Claudia's muscles were weak and her hands and legs could not move, "She went to the hospital and soon after, she was 100 percent paralyzed. ”

Based on the latest available data, Colorado reported four cases of foodborne botulism in 2019.

In 2021, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a suspected case of botulism in Arizona.

According to a USDA case report, the Arizona Department of Health collected samples from the patient's home, which included a can of vegetable chicken rice that had already been eaten.

Tests found that the patient's blood and canned food contained botulinum toxin type A. The soup reportedly had a foul smell when opened, but the jar did not leak or bulge.

At present, Claudia has been admitted to the hospital for more than 50 days, and doctors estimate that it will take 6 months to 1 year to fully recover.

Claudia's family is raising $200,000 for her medical bills, and it is reported that the family has run out of travel medical insurance.

In the face of pre-made dishes, friends need to choose carefully. Check the expiration date before buying, and don't buy pre-made dishes that have a slight expiration date.
