We have all encountered difficulties in the topic selection stage, how to put an end to sensationalism, pretentiousness, moaning without illness and even miserable topic selection, and hit the heart of the interviewer? I used a complete set of European and American master's thesis opening methods to help students.
Students will also be guided through four steps to further transform the topic into a project proposition (Problem Statement). In this process, the most important thing is to grasp the depth and breadth of thinking.
The breadth is easy to understand, but it takes time, that is, it requires students to see a lot of things and understand the operation of the whole society.
For example, in order to give new students a deep thinking and perceptual experience, I will ask them very "seriously": "Why did you choose H· ART?"x5!! you experience:

I said, "What else, you can tell me from the beginning, how did you hear about Hanyi, how did you decide to audition?"
Student: "The main thing is that I have a senior, and if it weren't for him, I wouldn't know Hanyi." Before the audition, I felt that the teacher had a good background and a good teaching. ”
I said, "And what? How did you feel after listening to it? How did you end up deciding after a lap?"
Student: "Compare looking at other people's successes and other people's stories. Feeling H· ART's teachers made plans for my situation, allocated resources, and presented cases of students who were in a similar situation to me. Although I don't remember what cases I watched, I at least felt that in H· ART may be able to grow stronger slowly. ”
I said, "Look at it, I asked you why you chose Hanyi three times, and you have deepened your wish from being a teacher and having a senior." What if I ask again?"
Student: "Teacher, I want you to do what you say you did." ”
I said, "No problem, I want you to do all the homework I asked me to do, okay?"

5 Whys
A great gentleman's agreement was thus reached through the 5 whys questioning method. In fact, pedagogy is a relational science, and teachers need to build a relationship of mutual trust with students, which is the basis for creating miracles.
01 The number of light will be volumes meaningless, you have to roll cognition
Similarly, everyone knows how to model, do research, and do models, and they all know that design thinking is in the top 10% of the students in their respective schools, so what are your advantages?
Isn't it that you have to know something that others don't know, that others can't think of?
Do a thought experiment, when you see an egg on the table, what can you think of? Just an egg?
If I were to ask, I would start by asking myself:
How did this egg get to my desk? What does the logistics system behind it look like? What does the cold chain technology look like to keep it fresh? What if it's delivered by a "hungry" errand boy, if the purchase quantity doesn't reach the minimum order quantity......
Asking questions is not a sign of ignorance, on the contrary, the more you know, the more likely you are to ask high-quality, unique questions. If you have a wide range of knowledge, you will naturally think deeply, and if you think more, you will naturally ask more, and if you ask more, you will naturally learn more, and if you learn more, you will have a wide range of knowledge.
This kind of reasoning, if I change the case, everyone will think that it is not chicken soup. Recently, I had students who were preparing for an interview for a position as a prospective designer in the Xiaomi automotive team. When I asked him, "You keep saying that you know that you can operate and study users proficiently, how do you interpret the meaning of Xiaomi's hope that SU7 can become the first car in the life of Xiaomi users?" or how do you interpret the first car in your life?"

His answer was extremely simple: "That's the person who just got his driver's license and bought Xiaomi's first car! Isn't it very simple? Is there a problem?"
I said, "That's true, but what else? Novice drivers have just picked up the car, they don't know the size of the car, they don't know how much space to leave on both sides of the road, pedestrians, if the first car can give them these reminders and help, they will feel very safe."
At the same time, being able to drive does not mean that you will have a prediction of road conditions, which requires years of driving experience accumulation and learning to do. So how can generative AI provide more appropriate driver assistance? These are all problems that the current car has not yet done. ”
The reason why I can provide students with relevant perspectives is that I have rich experience, and I may still have experience in many cases, and I have been exposed to enough cases to know what kind of content is already very mediocre, you still have to think, you have to ask, and you have to research to dig up things.

Why do students need teachers to make portfolios? Because every teacher uses the meals they have eaten, the books they have read, and the roads they have traveled to lead students, and slowly grind their thinking so that they can make projects with bright spots.
For me, design education has always been engaged in agricultural activities, and mass and reproduction education does not belong and should not appear in this field.
02So what are the personal highlights?
Some students are busy following the completion of the project, but they still don't know where their strengths are, where their personal highlights are, and sometimes they have reached the interview simulation stage, and when they write a project from beginning to end and how to express it, they can still sigh: Wow, teacher, is my project really so good? Is this what I did? I can't laugh or cry when I hear it.
In order to make students aware of this, I will remind them many times when doing projects what advantages they have and what they can bring to the major they are applying for, so that they can consciously lean towards it.

For example, this year, Ms. You led and I also brought a student from a project, referred to as student L, she is a student of Normal University, and has studied courses related to children's learning, so she has an advantage over other students in this aspect of design, so she set the topic and did a children's talent test, and later extended it, and customized a set of children's teaching methods as an extension project.
She is also a little special, when she was in this class at school, she was taught in a fog, and after listening to the class, she didn't know what learning characteristics children had when receiving information, and how to better transmit information, so she designed a new teaching model with doubts and disagreements.
So how do children receive information?
For example, there is a group of children in the class, who can understand the information through words, and the teacher will understand it once he says it; the second group is sensitive to pictures, and the teacher draws a picture and explains it in words, and they also understand;
Therefore, in the face of different children, I have to use different methods to teach, in order to ensure that the children can receive information, and then understand and learn, combined with my experience and personal professional perspective to analyze this phenomenon, and produce projects, and later she won the offer of Huangyi Education Creativity:

Nowadays, many students are easy to fall into the misunderstanding, as a designer, I want to roll up technology, can write programming, can do machinery, and even go to research and development of artificial intelligence, so it is better to change my major directly.
Although car designers need to know aerodynamics and how the engine works, it does not mean that we have to rub an engine out by hand, the proportion of skills, where is the core competitiveness of the individual, how to cooperate with the design and technology, and how to have personal characteristics and positioning, is the key to the design of this road to go far.
03Let's talk about some of the current trend changes
The youngest student I have now is in the sixth grade of elementary school this year, and the oldest is studying for a doctorate.

Therefore, in the last paragraph of the article, I want to talk to you about more specific things, of course, the specific trend cannot cover everyone, but these places have changed a lot, and students in related majors can pay attention to it.
For example, students who have studied service design in recent years have received a good offer, not because the project contains a great service experience, or what technology has been used to greatly improve the service process.
The year before last, I had a student who purely did product design, and was admitted to the royal art service design, and the two students admitted this year are more technical students, and the portfolio is more of an entertainment and tourism project, really what a systematic service process, they don't:

To sum up, service design majors are beginning to care more about whether students can show who they are, what skills they have, and what they bring to the service design industry. What the service design is, on the contrary, is not so important.
In addition, the trend of architectural design has changed. One of my students this year, referred to as student D, came to us to prepare for product design at the beginning, and we brainstormed and discussed what project to do.
Student D may be because of the day and night in bed work sleep rest, sleep and rest, we started from sleep to determine the topic, at that time it was a reference to a method, said that people should go to bed when it is time to effectively change the sleep situation, then she did an experiment herself, every morning at 8:00 her sister pulled her out of the bedroom, locked the door, and gave her the key at 9:30 at night, and her sleep quality improved greatly after a week.
Through experiments, she verified that this method is effective, but if you just find someone to help you collect the keys, then there is no room for design to play, we continue to think, for example, from the perspective of product design, how to make a bed that people with sleep disorders can not lie on at other times, from folding beds to inflatable beds, etc., have been passed, it sounds very unimpressive.

Later, I told her that if you want to find a bed that can appear out of thin air and disappear out of thin air, the user does not have to work hard, you can think about whether there are any degradable materials in the biomaterial, which can be formed in ten hours, and disappear after ten hours, and then she did find it, and got a 3D printing equipment, and began to print out the bed at 9:00 in the evening, and the bed was formed at 10:00, and the equipment will recycle the bed after 8:00 the next morning, and then dissolve the material at high temperature, and continue to use it at night.
But this technology is too expensive, if it is sold to an individual, who does it will lose, but if you do ToB, use the bed as a hotel product to improve the user's sleep quality, the user's sleep quality can be improved after a week or two, whether it is utilization or profitability and user affordability, it will be much better, so she designed a hotel.
The students found themselves interested in the environment, urban design, and architecture, so the project was improved in that direction in the future. The ART Department of Architecture also found a architecture major that was suitable for her background declaration based on her situation, and emphasized cross-border architecture, and then she took classes at both ends of the Department of Industrial Interaction and the Department of Architecture, and directly won the architecture-related offers of Harvard, Pennsylvania, and Columbia:

Why did it take so long and so much foreshadowing to talk to you about this, because two years ago, student D may not be able to win the offer of these three major schools, these famous architecture schools, in fact, prefer students with solid foundations, why do we dare to play like this this year, because the situation is different.
We all know that the traditional construction industry has entered a bottleneck period, and the shrinkage of civil engineering and real estate is not a new thing, if the construction of real estate wants to develop, it must break through, so in the past two years, everyone wants to break through the threshold, colleges and universities will have a higher acceptance of people with different ideas and inspiration, and architecture students can also grasp this trend in the past two years to try some new possibilities, which are okay.
Finally, I want to say that this year I received a batch of very good students, one of whom applied for another institution to do a portfolio at the beginning, and after accompanying a friend to listen to the class, I was attracted by me, and then went to the school to find a student in H· The seniors who have taken classes at ART asked, asked about the experience, asked about the project, asked about the result, and now follow me to do the project.
He knows what he wants, knows how to compare, knows how to research, knows how to take the initiative to understand and judge, and my wish is to cultivate more such students, students who can constantly take the initiative to think about changing decisions, and finally the application results are generally not too bad.
