According to the official determination of the China Earthquake Network, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea area of Hualien County, Taiwan at 2:59 on April 17, with an epicenter depth of 18 kilometers and an epicenter located at 24.10 degrees north latitude and 121.83 degrees east longitude, about 16 kilometers away from Taiwan Island.
Surrounding counties: The epicenter is 23 kilometers away from Xincheng Township, 26 kilometers away from Hualien City, 31 kilometers away from Ji'an Township, 34 kilometers away from Xiulin Township, 42 kilometers away from Shoufeng Township, 24 kilometers away from Hualien County, and 108 kilometers away from Taipei City.
Epicenter terrain: The average altitude within 5 km of the epicenter is about -1850 meters.
Historical earthquakes: According to the China Earthquake Network Quick Report Directory, there have been 291 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or higher within 200 kilometers of the epicenter in the past five years, and the largest earthquake is a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the sea area of Hualien County, Taiwan on April 3, 2024 (34 kilometers away from the epicenter), and the distribution of the top 50 historical earthquakes by magnitude is shown in the figure.
