author:Singapore Eye

Katong-Joo Chiat is one of Singapore's most vibrant neighbourhoods and will be the first new cultural heritage site to be launched by the National Heritage Board.

Katong-Joo Thiet has a long history and a perfect blend of old and new. Colourful pre-war shophouses and diverse neighbourhoods coexist with modern shopping malls and trendy cafes.

Even before the land reclamation in the 70s of the 19th century, the picturesque seaside attracted many settlers. Wealthy people in the Straits or Eurasian communities built mansions and hotels here for weekend getaways.

Ms Tan Li Ming, a volunteer resident of Katong-Joo Thiet district, said, "I have lived in this community since I was born and have always loved sharing the cultural heritage and hidden treasures here with my friends and family. I was so excited that Katong-Joo Thiet was the first new cultural heritage site to start, and I immediately signed up as a volunteer. The invaluable volunteer training prepared me to coach one of the excursions and fostered camaraderie and community spirit with other passionate volunteers."
