When the first rays of light from the east shine through the yellow wooden grille on the orange wall of the entrance, like the charming warm-toned space of Barragán's own house, this warm light will gradually spread to the living room, making the whole interior take on a serene warm yellow tone in the early morning light. The uneven texture of the walnut carved door reflects the light and shadow, and the shadows of the leaves climb up the yellow rough microcement wall.
The living room, with teak screens and blue-grey fabric sofas lined with mottled hand-made flower carpets, is the most wonderful moment of the day, and the air is filled with warmth and tranquility.
Located in the western suburbs of Shanghai, in the upper part of a 90s townhouse complex, Residence S was renovated and designed by architect Kailun for his family of three. The original two-storey interior was renovated with the addition of an attic, which functionally served as both a residence and an art studio. The renovation is guided by color, starting from the entrance space of the residence, and carrying out a series of dismantling and reshaping of the space around the original structure: using means such as opening holes in the space, resetting the flow line, and introducing skylight, etc., to create opportunities for family members to communicate and interact when they are moving in the space, forming a composite space that is interconnected and respectful. At the same time, the design explores the spatial expression of aesthetic emotions in the residence through the study of the relationship between color, circulation and structural elements in the space.

Crimson clues
The Crimson Clues
At the junction of the entrance and living space, there is a crimson circular steel column, the only steel structure in the original building. The design choice starts with the entrance space, which revolves around this crimson steel column, and cuts the roof and roof slabs directly above the entrance space of the original building to bring in daylight, forming a full-height daylight patio, and then opening a window on the side of the master bedroom facing the patio, so that it can have a direct visual connection with the entrance.

The crimson I-beam on one side of the top of the column is used to reinforce the suspended master bedroom space on the second floor after cutting the floor slab, and it becomes an important marker in the main space along with the steel columns.
▼The crimson steel column at the entrance
On the other side of the column, a staircase of crimson steel and solid wood treads is placed, and a steel bridge is added between the master bedroom and the walk-in closet, so that people need to walk through the hallway to reach the cloakroom. In this way, the entrance space is activated at once, making the entrance a family communication space that can be viewed from different angles and actively interact with family members.

Another new circulation line is in the study on the second floor.
▼ Study
Walk up the crimson steel staircase to the attic, where the metal sculptures created by the owner are displayed on the white oak floor of the attic, which is a relatively independent and pure space in the house, and the glass at the end of the attic can also look out into the entrance hallway.

In this way, the circulation around the crimson pillars eventually connects the entrance, living room, bedroom, and studio, forming a closed loop, creating a two-and-a-half-storey composite space where different family members can always pay attention to each other, promote communication, and do not interfere with each other.

A Dialogue Between Color and Light
Over time, light travels through the space, passing through the walls of different colors and textures, expressing warmth, warmth and peace.

At both ends of the pure white corridor on the second floor, the bright yellow master bedroom door and the island green children's room door face each other. The open kitchen and bathroom are all made of blue-green Moroccan tiles: the lake green of the kitchen, the glazed green of the main bathroom, and the turquoise color of the children's bathroom.

Bare original structure
The Exposed Original Structures
Influenced by Kazuo Shinohara, the original concrete beams and columns in the space are deliberately exposed after microcement surface treatment as an important element of the spatial composition. The main beam on the first floor separates the living space, the reception area, the dining area, and the open kitchen, forming a fluid and layered space. The original umbrella-like concrete structure of the attic roof, framed by the hollowing out of the white ceiling on the second floor, has become a unique artistic element in the space.

Artistic space experience
An Artistic Spatial Experience
The owner of the residence is both an art collector and a creator, so the planning of the art experience is closely intertwined with the design of the space.
▼ Ink screen artwork
In addition to the strong dramatic tension of the building itself, some core elements are also set up in each space, such as the soft decoration of the living room, which revolves around the ink screen on paper called "Black Dragon Introduction" created by the young artist Zhang Wenzhi, this group of screens with oriental fantasy colors injects soul into the living room, and also forms a dialogue with other handmade or solid wood furniture and objects introduced into the space.

▼3D printing art installation "Symbiosis No.2"
▼Digital photography "Bush"
Not only that, the selection of artworks will also be combined with the flow of the space, for example, the background wall of the study staircase is a digital photograph of the artist "Shrubs" enlarged and printed on the wall cloth. In the photography, colorful lines emerge like wind-like numbers, transforming the park's green landscape into a place of fear and tension. On the second floor, in the empty corridor, the experimental video works of the same series appear in the form of projections. The pure white walls, bright yellow doors, and changing and tense artistic images are intertwined, giving the space a mysterious and dramatic atmosphere.

The House of Colors is an experiment with the aesthetic expression of color, in which bright yellows, oranges, crimson, various subtle blue-greens, as well as abstract white surfaces and structural elements form a three-dimensional painting in space. As with the artist's oil paint on canvas, the size, proportion, and position of the color blocks are carefully crafted to achieve just the right balance, while also blending in with the overall artistic experience. Being in such an artistic atmosphere at home is abundant, warm, quiet and comfortable, becoming a poetic dwelling.
