In October 1952, after General Clark took over from Ridgway as the third commander-in-chief of the United Nations Forces, in order to speed up the process of the war and at the same time to grab more bargaining chips at the negotiating table, it was decided to launch an all-out offensive on the front of our 12th and 15th armies and four divisions stationed in the Shangganling area at the 38th parallel (salient).

Although this tactic can effectively reduce the casualties of the troops and preserve the vital force, it means that the volunteer soldiers on the battlefield will be outnumbered for most of the time.
In fact, 16 grassroots companies on the front line of the Volunteer Army were directly rebuilt in this battle, and the casualty rate of company and platoon cadres exceeded 60%, and the casualty rate of front-line squad leaders also exceeded 100%.

At dawn on November 5, the commander of the United Nations forces decided to mobilize all the heavy artillery to celebrate the election of the old commander Eisenhower as president, and vowed to take the 597 heights to celebrate his victory, and this day was also one of the most difficult days of the Shangganling blockade.

After this battle, Hu Xiudao followed the 12th Army to the rear to rest, and then stationed on the east coast to prevent the landing of American troops. After returning to China, Hu Xiudao grew up to be the deputy chief of staff of a certain army, and died in Nanjing in 2003.
