He has been hailed by some as an academic role model and an academic champion because he advocates freedom of thought and inclusiveness. But do you know that Mr. Cai Yuanpei, who is known as a model for learning, life, and education in China, also has some not-so-glorious things in his history.
If it weren't for April 12th, I wouldn't have remembered to talk about it. We all know the "April 12 Counter-Revolutionary Massacre", to put it bluntly, Lao Chiang suddenly played hooligan, raised his butcher's knife and waved it at the Communists, the Kuomintang leftists and the revolutionary masses.
At that time, Lao Jiang was poisoned, and Du Yuesheng, the gangster leader in Shanghai, also played an extremely shameful and cruel role in it. But in recent years, although Du Yuesheng has become a hooligan, he has morality, and he also talks about love. slowly transformed into playing Du Yuesheng, shaping Du Yuesheng, and praising Du Yuesheng.
Du Yuesheng participated in the counter-revolutionary massacre and raised the butcher's knife because he was originally a hooligan underworld, so it is understandable. But who would have thought that Mr. Cai Yuanpei, who is regarded as an ancestor by the public today, also personally participated in the planning of the "April 12 counter-revolutionary coup". That is, Cai Yuanpei also had the blood of the Communists and the Kuomintang left on his hands.
Mr. Cai Yuanpei is certainly a scholar, gentle, and progressive side, but it is also true that he personally participated in concocting the so-called "evidence of the conspiracy of the Chinese Communist Party to sabotage the Kuomintang"; and it is also true that he personally concocted "the fact that the Communist Party of Zhejiang undermined its own party." Cai Yuanpei personally presided over a series of secret meetings, which were meetings to study murder, and he helped Lao Chiang to clarify the party and clear the Communist Party from the Kuomintang. And Wang Jingwei also personally participated in this series of conspiracy.
Of course, human nature is complicated, and Cai Yuanpei does have a progressive side, but he does also have a murderous side, a side that participates in a counter-revolutionary coup, and a side that raises a butcher's knife, which is called the two-point theory. Therefore, we can't just talk about such a character's strengths, but not about his unsightly side.
Few people talk about Mr. Cai Yuanpei's unbearable side, everyone said that Cai Yuanpei is a veteran of the Kuomintang, the president of Peking University, and a famous educator, who has done a good job in learning and advocates freedom and tolerance. An old friend of mine has been talking about freedom and tolerance every day lately, but he himself is not very tolerant. Because our family has a small house that we bought in the United States more than ten years ago, my old friend was angry when he saw my house. Let's go back and talk about Cai Yuanpei.
If you talk about Cai Yuanpei's progressive side, it should be the first to recommend that he founded the China Education Association, then founded the Guangfu Society, and then later served as the chairman of the Shanghai League branch. It should be said that some of his activities in those years laid the foundation for the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution later.
When Cai Yuanpei was the president of Peking University, he was concerned about and even supported the May Fourth Movement at that time, and he was credited with the progress of Peking University, including the improvement of the school. At that time, there was a movement called the "Civil Rights Protection Alliance" movement, and Cai Yuanpei also had a part in this.
Cai Yuanpei has a mustache and wears glasses, I estimate that the material of the spectacle lenses at that time may be glass, the spectacle lenses are relatively small, and there is a photo when he has black hair, it is combed with two or eight points, the left is two, the right is eight, and the eyes are stunned. The tie was also played differently than it is today, and the suit was a three-piece suit with a small shoulder underneath.
Many people can't understand how such an old gentleman, who is inclined to revolutionary reform and has a good relationship with Lu Xun and also supports the May Fourth Movement, can support Chiang Kai-shek in carrying out the April 12 coup?
Mr. Cai Yuanpei advocated Marxism in his early years, and he also had contacts with Mr. Sun Yat-sen, so how could he violate Sun Yat-sen's three major policies of "uniting with Russia and helping workers and peasants" and turn anti-communist? Moreover, I tend to look at the matter of killing the Communist Party from the angle of a person's complex nature and limited understanding, and he may also have a dark side and an unsightly side in his heart, but in the depths of his heart, he may also have entanglements in his heart.
To make a long story short, there were two factions at that time: one was Wang Jingwei, who adhered to Sun Yat-sen's three major principles at that time, maintained close ties with the Communist Party, and also gave some assistance to the workers' and peasants' movement. The other faction is Lao Chiang, the big rightist of the Kuomintang, who resolutely abandoned the CCP and used this opportunity to expand his own power.
At that time, there was a struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and in March 1927 a hostile regime was formed: the Kuomintang in Wuhan, with Wang Ching-wei as president, and the Kuomintang in Nanjing was Chiang Kai-shek.
In the south alone, two opposing central governments appeared, and under such circumstances, Cai Yuanpei firmly supported Lao Chiang and participated in the "Qing Party" anti-communism. So Cai Yuanpei didn't make a wrong decision out of whim, but had far-reaching motivations.
Cai Yuanpei has a high seniority, and he has a high status and deep ties in the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. For example, many CCP officials have a close relationship with Cai Yuanpei, Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao, the two founders of the Communist Party have a close relationship with Cai Yuanpei. Recently, a series of movies and TV series have written that Cai Yuanpei is completely positive, he does have a positive side, but the other side is also true.
People are very complicated, and old friends don't necessarily have the same three views. Cai Yuanpei and the leaders of the Communist Party share the same value orientation, but there are also differences. For example, he was a staunch advocate of class struggle and anti-communism. Cai Yuanpei, Chen Duxiu, and Li Dazhao were all good friends, and he believed that the revolution could not be used and could not turn the situation around, so he took a resolute attitude against the Wuhan Kuomintang's policy of uniting workers and the Communist Party movement. He even went into battle himself, saying that since the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of Zhejiang, he has done many bad things, such as mobilizing the people to disrupt the rear, destroying rice shops, and oppressing workers.
Today, someone defended Cai Yuanpei, saying that although he advocated purging the party and participating in the conspiracy meeting, he advocated that he killed people only when there was evidence. Later, the murder was terrible, it was Du Yuesheng who did it, and Lao Jiang did it, and Lao Jiang wanted to take the opportunity to expand his territory, so Mr. Cai Yuanpei was a righteous gentleman.
I understand what many people say about this situation, but I am not satisfied that some people today only talk about the bright side of Mr. Cai Yuanpei's history, but not the dark side behind him. The topic I'm talking about today may upset some people, but even so, it still needs to be explained.
