Unlike other schools that only change the tune of the bell, Xingzhi Primary School has directly eliminated the traditional method of marking the beginning and ending of each class with a bell. At first, the idea was difficult for both students and teachers to accept, but as the practice progressed, the results of this experiment were pleasantly surprised.
Xingzhi Primary School first started the experiment in the college campus of grades 3 to 6 where students have strong self-discipline. In order to make up for the lack of bells, each classroom has set up a "bell manager", who is recommended by the class or takes turns. The administrator holds a small bell and a watch and rings the bell on time between classes to remind teachers and classmates of the time.
With the deepening of practice, each class has formed a mature operating mechanism. The school has also added clocks to the playground and activity areas to make up for the lack of time control in these areas, which are far away from the classrooms and difficult for students to control their time. With the passage of time, students gradually developed a good habit of actively paying attention to time.
The conscientious and responsible attitude of the administrators also reflects their consciousness of growing rapidly. After a week or two of the trial period, the school conducted a survey of students and parents. The results showed that most of the students were very supportive and adaptable to such a change, believing that it would improve their subjective awareness of time.
In view of the positive results of the pilot phase, the university has decided to continue to promote this practice in the subsequent phases. Subsequently, Xingzhi Primary School Wener Campus and Xingzhi No. 2 Primary School also carried out gradual attempts. Compared with the college campus, because these two campuses cover more grades and have larger class sizes, supporting work needs to be more refined.
Based on the previous experience, the school installed clocks in the corridor and playground in advance, and formulated perfect operation guidelines. Although there were some sporadic problems in the early days, the situation is also improving with the careful teaching of teachers and the continuous adaptation of students. Leaders and teachers reported that the overall order of the campus was better after the bell was gone, and the classroom atmosphere was more focused.
After several months of trial operation, the experiment of canceling the bell in the three campuses of Xingzhi Primary School was surprisingly successful. Students develop the ability to consciously control their time, and teachers are able to be more flexible in their lessons. This not only promoted teaching reform, but also greatly reduced the impact on the surrounding residents. The school is currently considering how to extend this beneficial practice to the whole school.
With the development of information technology and the update of educational concepts, it is likely that campus management will not rely so much on traditional bell signs in the future.
