Today I would like to introduce to you Ouyang Xun, one of the "Four Masters of Regular Script". His calligraphy embodies a dangerous momentum in the plainness, and is called "European style". Ouyang Xun, together with Yu Shinan, Chu Suiliang, and Xue Ji, is known as the "Four Masters of the Early Tang Dynasty", and together with his son Ouyang Tong, he is known as "Big and Small Europe". His calligraphy is also known as "the first regular script of the Tang Dynasty".
Ouyang Xun, the character letter, was born in Linxiang County, Tanzhou in 557 AD. He was born in a famous family, his grandfather Ouyang Wei was the founding father of Nanchen, and Ouyang Su inherited the family business and served as the assassin of Guangzhou. However, the family's prestige collapsed with the fall of Nan Chen. Ouyang Xun experienced the tragic blow of the destruction of his family at the age of 14 and became the only survivor.
In the face of the decline of his family and his own misfortunes, Ouyang Xun did not give up his belief in life. He was adopted by Mr. Jiang and was able to start over. However, Ouyang Xun is ordinary and ugly, and is ridiculed as a macaque with a "shrunken head and shoulders". Despite this, he devoted himself to the study of calligraphy.
With the change of dynasties, Ouyang Xun has undergone many changes. He moved through the regimes of the Southern Chen, Sui and Tang dynasties, suffering gossip and ostracism, but he always insisted on focusing on the study of calligraphy without outside interference. Fortunately, thanks to his excellent calligraphy skills, he was appreciated and helped by nobles, and successfully survived one crisis after another.
With his talent, Ouyang Xun finally became a member of the Tang Dynasty officialdom, became a consultant in the matter, and contributed to the development of the Tang Dynasty. He was given the task of casting the "Kaiyuan Tongbao" and participated in the compilation of the "Art and Literature Gathering" together with other literati.
