Ge Hong (284~364 A.D.), the word Zhichuan, self-named Baopuzi, was a famous pharmacist in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Han nationality, Jin Danyang County (now Jurong, Jiangsu) people. The grandnephew of Ge Xuan, a scholar of the Three Kingdoms, is known as the little fairy Weng. He was once named the Marquis of Guannei, and later lived in seclusion in Luofu Mountain for alchemy.
Ge Hong was a famous physician in the Eastern Jin Dynasty of China and a mediator of preventive medicine. He is the author of "Behind the Elbow", which was the first to record the symptoms and treatment of infectious diseases such as smallpox and scrub typhus. "Tianxing Spotted Sores" is the earliest record of smallpox in the world.
"Hug Puzi" is mainly based on Taoist thought, so Taoism regards it as a classic and includes it in the "Taiqing Department" of "Daozang". The inner and outer parts of this book were originally published separately, but although the Daozang collected both articles, it inserted a piece of "Farewell to Puzi" between the two, so it was not combined into one.
When the Ming Dynasty engraved this book, it was divided into three types, and the general name was "Hug Puzi". This book is available in the Daozang and the Four Serials.

Therefore, those who have learned the lower levels of Taoism will be able to serve all things; Those who have learned a higher level of Taoism will be able to live forever. They know that the best medicines can prolong life, so they take these drugs to pursue immortality, and they know that spirit turtles and cranes have a long lifespan, so they follow their guiding actions to increase their age.

In addition, the branches and leaves of pines and cypresses are very different from other trees, and the body shapes of turtles and cranes are completely different from those of other birds and beasts. As for Peng Zu and Lao Tzu, they are still human beings, and they are not non-human things that can live a long life alone, but because they have mastered Taoism, they are not a longevity formed by natural nature.
All trees cannot imitate pines and cypresses, and all kinds of birds and beasts cannot learn turtles and cranes, so they have a short life, and people have wisdom and intelligence, as long as they can practice the Taoism of Peng Zu and Lao Tzu, they can achieve the same effect of longevity as them. If there are indeed no immortals in the world, there are nearly 1,000 immortals recorded by the philosophers in the past, and they all left their surnames and names, as well as their behavior and experience, which shows that this is not a fictional lie.
If you think that they all inherited the peculiar essence qi very specially, but according to legend, they all had teachers and practiced taking pills, so it can be seen that they were not born to understand Taoism.
If you can't learn the art of Taoism, but someone can change the appearance of the body, swallow the knife and spit out the flames, sit there and disappear in the blink of an eye, raise clouds and fog, attract insects and snakes, gather fish and turtles, and turn thirty-six kinds of ore medicine into liquid in an instant, dissolve jade into syrup, dissolve gold into water, dive into the abyss without getting wet, step on the blade without getting hurt in the body, there are more than 900 kinds of changes, according to these spells, there is nothing that does not work, so why not believe that the gods can be learned？

The success of Xuexian is very slow in terms of time, and there are many taboos. It is impossible to persevere unless you have a strong and powerful talent that surpasses the will of the world.
Some people are easy to doubt themselves and give up halfway, so they think that the way of immortals and immortality are indeed impossible to learn. The Immortal Sutra says: 'If you take the elixir and keep your thoughts, you can live with the sky, and you can also refine your brain and achieve fetal breath, so that you can live forever.' These are wise sayings!
Virtuous people among the people can still live up to their conscience internally and be worthy of themselves externally, and they will not deceive the heavens and change their promises to the subordinates, not to mention those true people who have attained the Tao in ancient times, will they fabricate lies out of thin air and take things that are absolutely impossible to deceive and mislead those who come after them?
If they don't have the fate of cultivating and becoming immortals, they will always refuse to believe in immortals, so how can they be forced to believe in them?"
Some people questioned: "The longevity of the turtle and the crane is probably a lie made up by the world, and who can stay with these two animals from beginning to end and thus confirm their longevity?"
Bao Puzi replied: "If you can grasp the essentials of affairs, you will be able to know everything that happened far away from the eight directions, and things that were far away from a hundred generations ago will seem to have happened." It doesn't have to happen at your doorstep, wait until you see it with your own eyes, and then you can understand it.

The "Jade Ce Ji" says: 'The spirit turtle that lived for a thousand years showed five colors on its body, and its forehead. They have twin bony protrusions, like animal horns, that can understand human speech, and can float on lotus leaves, or hide under clumps of yarrow, and there are often white clouds hovering over them.
Cranes that live for a thousand years chirp with the seasons and can perch on trees, while those that are less than a thousand years old can never gather on trees, and the long-lived cranes have pure white on their bodies and completely red on their heads. When you see them like this, you know that they are long-lived.
However, long-lived animals are intelligent and generally hide in deep and secret places, so people rarely see them. According to the records of the "Yuce Ji" and the "Changyu Sutra", not only the turtle and the crane are two kinds of animals have a long life, but also say that the thousand-year-old pine tree, the branches and leaves will spread out to the four sides, and the treetops on the top are very short, looking at the past from a distance, like a dormant car cover, in which some animals are hidden, some are like green oxen, some are like green sheep, some are like green dogs, and some are like green people, all of which can live for 10,000 years.
It also says: 'Serpents have an infinite lifespan. Macaques can become apes when they reach 800 years of age, and apes can become monkeys when they reach 500 years of age, and they can live up to 1,000 years. A toad can live to be three thousand years old, and a unicorn can live to be two thousand years old.
Tenghuang, a divine horse, and Jiguang, a divine beast, can live for three thousand years. "Chitose Bird" and "Banzai Bird" both have human faces and bird bodies, and their lifespans are the same as their names "Chitose" and "Banzai".
Tigers, deer, and rabbits can live up to a thousand years, and those who live to five hundred years have white hair. Bears can live up to 500 years, and they can be fickle.
Foxes and jackals can live to be 800 years old, and when they live to be 500 years old, they are good at taking on human form. Rats can live to be 300 years old, and when they live to be 100 years old, they will turn white, and they are good at attaching themselves to the human body and predicting good luck and bad luck, and their name is "Zhong", and they can know the good luck and bad luck of the year, as well as things thousands of miles away. It is impossible to enumerate them all, but only those who are well-informed can know the names of things when they encounter them, and those who are well-informed can understand things without being confused.
If you can't know things, then even the plants and trees in the garden, the birds and beasts in the fields and rivers will have many people you don't know, not to mention those spiritual things that are very different from other things?
"Historical Records: The Biography of Gui Ce" records: "A resident of the Yangtze River and Huai River area, when he was a child, used a turtle to support his bed, and then he died of old age, and the family moved his bed, but the turtle was still alive. So the life span of the tortoise is not less than fifty or sixty years.
If it does not drink water or eat, it can not die for such a long time, so it can be seen that the difference between it and ordinary animals is too great, and how can we doubt that it can live to a thousand years old?
Chen Zhonggong, a former governor of Taiqiu and a native of Yingchuan, was an honest scholar, and he wrote the "Persona": "Zhang Guangding, a native of his county, often took refuge in turmoil. He has a daughter who is only four years old and cannot travel long distances and cannot carry her on his or her back.
He thought that if he abandoned her, she would starve to death, and he couldn't bear to leave her body exposed. There was a big tomb on the edge of the village, and there was a cave dug through the top of the tomb, so Zhang Guangding put the girl in a utensil, hung her down, put her at the bottom of the tomb, took dry food and drinking water for several months, and then left her.
When the society was stable, three years had passed before Zhang Guangding was able to return to his hometown. He wanted to go to the ancient tomb to collect his daughter's bones and rebury them. When he got there, he saw that his daughter was still sitting in the tomb, and she was very happy to see her parents, and she could still recognize them.
And her parents were worried that she was a ghost at first. Her father went down to the tomb and walked to her to believe that she was not dead. When asked where she got her food, the girl said that she was very hungry when she first ran out of food, and then she saw an animal in the corner of the grave, with its neck stretched and swallowing air, so she tried to imitate it, and gradually became less hungry. Then I swallowed the air all day and all month until today.
The clothes and bedding left behind by the parents when they left are still in the grave, because they are not used to walk, and the clothes are not torn, so they do not feel cold. Zhang Guangding looked for the animal his daughter said, and it turned out to be just a big turtle. After my daughter came out, she ate food, and at first she vomited a little in her lower abdomen, and it took a long time to get used to it.
From this, it is enough to know that the turtle has a method of immortality, and those who pursue Taoist art can imitate it to achieve the same longevity as the turtle.
Ma Qian and Chen Zhonggong of Taishi Company are not people who talk nonsense. There are many insects, fish, birds and beasts in the world, and the reason why the ancients only cited these two animals was because they clearly knew that they were different.
Some people questioned: "The spirit turtle can lie dormant in the soil, and the crane can fly in the sky, if people only do a moment of hibernation, only do a short flight, it is still impossible, how can their longevity be learned?"
Bao Puzi replied: "There are many insects that can hibernate, and there are many birds that can fly, and people only cite turtles and cranes for a long lifespan, because they do not die, not because they can hibernate and fly."
Therefore, those who have attained enlightenment only let people learn their guiding movements to prolong their lives, and imitate their essence so that they do not eat food, not to learn how they lie dormant in the earth and fly in the sky.
Those who have mastered the Tao can stand among the clouds upwards and dive in the rivers and seas downwards. Therefore, Xiao Shi can swim in the sky with the soaring phoenix, and Qin Gao can swim in the abyss on a red carp, which is the proof that the enlightened person has magical skills, is it just a moment of dormancy, a short flight!
Dragons, snakes, cockroaches, apes, hedgehogs, crocodiles, and snails are all able to go winter without eating, and when they don't eat, they are fatter than when they eat, but no one can learn these skills. Moreover, there are many animals with a skill that surpass humans, not only turtles and cranes.
Therefore, Taihao imitated the spider and created the net, Jin Tian corrected the seasons according to the calls of various birds, Xuanyuan Yellow Emperor adjusted the rhythm according to the chirping of the phoenix, and Tang Yao observed the growth of the Mo pods to understand the months.
In the end, knowing that someone is leaving, the magpie knows that someone is coming, the fish can predict the climate of water and drought, the grasshopper can know where there is spring, the white wolf can know the rise of the Yin Dynasty, and the eagle can foresee the prosperity of the Zhou royal family, so it is not surprising that the spirit turtle and the crane are good at guiding the art of health preservation.

Moreover, there are hundreds of Taoist techniques recorded in the Immortal Scripture that can make people immortal, but there is only a difference between slow and fast, cumbersome or brief, and there is no need to imitate the spirit turtle and the crane.
The high-class people with lofty intentions and their thoughts are naturally subtle and accessible, and it is difficult to speculate on the far-reaching intentions of the immortals with the shallow thoughts of ignorant people.
Someone said, "We modern people can't know how to live forever, so why can only the ancients know?"
Bao Puzi replied, "This is probably the rather limited speech of a fool, not the wise mind of a well-informed."
Divination of the mystical principles of the celestial phenomena, estimating the impermanence of the sun, moon and five stars, commenting on the past astrological offenses, predicting the rise and fall of future personnel, looking up at the auspicious signs of the clouds, looking down at the auspicious signs of the hexagrams, strategizing the three chess pieces to determine the success or failure of the march, and deducing various celestial phenomena to predict the good and bad fortunes of the place.
Once you have calculated, you can know the situation of ghosts and immortals, and if you analyze all kinds of emotions, you can properly deal with good and evil events that seem to have no clue. The roots of these things can be investigated, and the traces and truths can also be explored.
However, those who are mediocre in talent and shallow in ability are not able to make them understand the mysteries of learning, so as to return to the state of simplicity, and they only study hard in vain and do not understand the profound and subtle knowledge thoroughly. It is the clumsy skills of digging holes and tenons, and the wheel also has unspeakable skills; and shallow things such as catching cicadas and catching lizards, the hunchbacked old man still has amazing skills.
It can be seen that everything depends on people, and the key lies in their extreme sincerity and single-mindedness. What's more, the Taoist technique of seeking immortals is profound and lofty, and it is really not easy to figure out its roots.

Those disciples of Chi Songzi and Wang Ziqiao, although they have obtained the effect of seeking immortals, they may not be able to understand the reason why it is so effective, let alone those mediocre people?
Immortals can learn, so the ancients recorded and passed down these things to those who were knowledgeable. If you understand and master it in your heart, you can believe in and cultivate the Immortal Dao.
Those who have doubts in their hearts are caused by their own fate, and they should not question why the ancients knew the immortal ways alone, and why I myself did not understand these immortal paths.
I now know that the Immortal Dao can be learned. I can cut off food and not eat it, I can make sure that the flowing beads fly in the alchemy furnace, and I can determine that gold and silver can be refined. But if I had to tell the bottom line, I really don't understand it.
The third is the vulgar
If a worldly person thinks that only the truth that he can understand by his mind is considered to exist, and the truth that cannot be considered clearly is considered nothing, then there are too few things in the world!
Therefore, Lao Tzu once said: 'Use the head of a wild cat to cure rat disease, and use a woodpecker to protect caries, if these methods can be deduced according to reason, then crabs can corrupt lacquer, hemp can destroy wine syrup, and this kind of situation cannot be deduced by reason.'"
If someone is suffering from a critical illness and urgently needs good medicine, but refuses to take it immediately. 'All things are different and chaotic, how can we examine them all clearly, and we must first investigate the original intention of Shennong and Qibo to use this herb to treat this disease, it would be too stupid!'
The third is the vulgar
Some people say: Human life and death have a certain fate, and the length of life is also predestined for a long time, and it is not those drugs that can increase or decrease people's life expectancy.
Even if the finger is broken, even if it is reconnected. Together, it is impossible to keep it alive, and even if it is eaten after the blood has flowed out, it will not be of any benefit. What's more, it is unreasonable to consume those pines and cypresses that are different from human beings, and want to prolong their short life in this way!
Bao Puzi replied: "In this way, it must be the same kind of thing to bring benefits, so the fingers that have been severed and the blood that has flowed out originally belong to the same body, not different kinds, why is it impossible to connect them again after they are broken, and they are not suitable to take them again after they are broken?"
I have seen many times people use snake bit paste to connect severed fingers, and use mulberry beans to treat the feet of chickens and ducks, which shows that the benefits of different things cannot but be recognized.
If, as you say, people can't rely on other things, then they should mash and refine their muscles and bones and make them into medicine for stab wounds, and decoction and boil their skin and hair to cure baldness.
Soil and water do not belong to the same species as flowers, but flowers depend on them for growth, and grains do not belong to the same species as humans, but humans must depend on them for life. Oil does not belong to fire, water does not belong to fish, but when the oil runs out, the fire goes out, and when the water dries up, the fish die.
Cutting down trees and parasites will die, cutting grass and rabbit silk will wither, Sichuan crabs will not return and crickets will die, mulberry trees will be cut down and borers will perish.
If you put the gold and white jade in the nine orifices of the deceased, then the body of the deceased will not decay, and if you soak the salt and salty brine into the flesh and bones, then the dried meat will not fester, not to mention that if you take those medicines that are suitable for health preservation and longevity, you can take them into your body, why should you wonder that they can make people immortal?"

Someone criticized and said: "The book of fairy magic is specious, it must have been made up by those who love life, and it may not be written by the Yellow Emperor and Lao Tzu, nor may it have been reviewed by Chi Songzi and Wang Ziqiao." ”
Bao Puzi replied: "If you follow your high theory, then the methods recorded in these books should be ineffective. But now, even if you try those little tricks, they all work!
I have seen many times that people use Fang Zhu to draw water from the moon at night, and Yang Sui to ask the sun for fire during the day, and these people can hide themselves from nothingness, change their appearance and become other species, knot their scarves and throw them on the ground and turn them into running rabbits, turn the red ribbons sewn with needlework into crawling snakes, let melons and vegetables and fruits bear fruit in a moment, let dragons and fish swim on plates, all of this is exactly like what is said in the book.
According to the Book of Han, when Luan Tai first met Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wu tried to get him to make the chess pieces fight each other, but the chess pieces collided with each other on their own. Moreover, the Book of the Later Han Dynasty also records that Wei Shangneng suddenly disappeared without a trace when he sat upright, and Zhang Kai was able to raise clouds and mist, which are all histories recorded by historians with both ability and political integrity, which are reliable and evidence.
This kind of thing about magic is included in the category of immortals, so it can be seen that these are not made up. Since all the small magic techniques have been verified, why is the immortal Dao technique not true and credible?"
Someone said: "I know that immortals can be learned, but if I ascend to the heavens and leave the world, then there will be no one to practice all kinds of sacrificial activities, and won't the ghosts of my ancestors be hungry?"
Bao Puzi replied: "I heard that my body is not damaged, which is the highest filial piety, not to mention that if you learn the way of the gods, you will be able to live forever and live with heaven and earth, which is more than the kind of filial piety that keeps your body intact, isn't it very far, far away?"
If we can really rise to the sky, step on the sun, use the clouds as a car, and use the neon as a car cover, chew the essence of the morning glow, absorb the essence of heaven and earth, drink the elixir and jade liquid, eat green and saffron, live in a jade palace, and walk in the clear sky.
If the ghosts of the ancestors knew it, they would surely be glorified because of us: some of them could assist the Emperor of the Five Directions, and some could supervise all kinds of gods; their noble status could come to their own hands without asking for it, and they could taste a gorgeous feast during their meals; they could rule over the ghost capital in terms of power, and they could reprimand Liang Cheng when they spoke of prestige; if they really learned the way of immortals, the things in between would be too mysterious to understand, and naturally they would not starve their ancestors.

The highest enlightened person, no one can surpass Lao Tzu. Lao Tzu had a son named Zong, who became a general in the Wei State, and was sealed in Duan Gan after making great contributions.
From this, it can be seen that people who learn the way of immortals today can naturally have their own children and grandchildren to inherit the sacrifice, how can the sacrifice be cut off?"
Some people say: "Those who have learned the way of immortals have learned the spell of breathing and breathing, and they all know the key to taking pills; they can hear thousands of miles away when they cover their ears, and they can see the future when they close their eyes; some of them abandon their gorgeous vehicles to drive the dragon, some leave the land of Shenzhou to live in Penglai and Yingzhou Immortal Island; some wander in the world, live freely in the world, and fly to the sky without leaving the world immediately; the goal of becoming immortals they advocate is the same, but some of them leave the world. Some remain on earth, but they are very different, why is that?"
Bao Puzi replied, "I heard from the teacher: 'Some immortals have ascended to heaven and some live on earth, and the main thing they have in common is that they can live forever, and as for leaving or staying, they each follow their own preferences. ’
In addition, according to the method of taking Huandanjin liquid, if you want to stay in the world for a while, you should only take half of the dose and leave the other half. If you want to ascend to heaven in the future, take it all.

The matter of immortality has been determined, and there will be no more worries about death, but it is only temporarily traveling on the ground, or entering the famous mountain, what is there to worry about?
Peng Zu said: "There are many noble officials and powerful immortals in the heavens, and the newly enlightened immortals have a low status, and there are more than one or two things to worship and serve, because the ascension to heaven is only more tiring and hard, so it is not worth the hard work to ascend to the heavenly realm, so he has lived in the world for more than 800 years." ’
He also said, 'In ancient times, some of those who attained immortality had feathers and wings on their bodies, and they were able to change into flight, so that they lost themselves and changed into other things that were different from them, just as birds and finches became mussels and pheasants became clams, which is not a human way of life at all. ’
The way of life of man is that he should eat sweet food, wear light and warm clothes, marry men and women normally, be in high office, be deaf and bright, have strong muscles and bones, have a happy face, be old but not decaying, be able to prolong his life, go out or retire at will, cold, heat, storm, and dampness cannot hurt him, ghosts, gods, and goblins of all kinds. Thou shalt not infringe upon him, neither any weapon nor any poison shall infringe upon him, sorrow, joy, slander, or praise. can't even affect him, this is precious!
If you abandon your wife and children, live alone in the mountains and Daze, far away from people's lives, and be lonely neighbors with trees and rocks, this kind of life is not commendable!

In the past, Mr. An Qi, Long Mei Ning Gong, Xiu Yang Gong, Yin Changsheng and others were all people who took half a dose of Huandan Gold Liquid. They remained, some for nearly a thousand years, and then left.
To be honest, people who pursue immortality are just nostalgic for everything we want now, and they will not rush to pursue ascension to heaven, and they will not think that ascending to heaven will be better than living on earth.
If you are lucky enough to stay at home, you can. Immortality, then why do you need to eagerly pursue ascending to the heavenly court? If there is no possibility of staying in the human world after learning the immortal path, it is another matter.
What Peng Zu said is in line with human feelings!" Someone asked, "Is it true that those who pursue the path of immortals should first establish merit?"
The Middle Part of the Jade Sutra says: "It is best to establish merit, and those who are exempt from mistakes are secondary." Those who practice Taoism believe that saving people from danger, avoiding disasters, and healing people's diseases so that they do not die in vain is the best merit.
Those who pursue the path of immortality should first take loyalty, filial piety, harmony, and benevolence as the foundation. If you don't cultivate moral behavior, and just blindly learn the arts, it is impossible to live forever.
If he has done a major evil deed, he will deduct his life span for a lifetime, and if he does a thousand small bad things, he will deduct his life span, and according to the severity of the mistake committed, the life span will be deducted from the lifespan.
There would have been a certain number of secular people who accepted their fate and gained lifespan. If the number is already small, and the number of mistakes is many, then the calculation will be quickly deducted and will die very early. ’
The third is the vulgar
He also said: If a person wants to be a local immortal, he should do 300 good deeds, and if he wants to be a celestial immortal, he should do 1,200 good deeds. If one thousand one hundred and ninety-nine good deeds are done, and one bad deed is suddenly done in between, then all the good deeds that were done before are completely lost, and the number of good deeds should be counted again.
Therefore, doing good deeds is not about being big, and doing bad things is not about being small. If you don't do bad things, but you boast about the good things you have done, and ask for a reward for doing good things, you will lose the good results of this good deed, but you will not lose it completely.
He also said: The accumulation of good deeds is not up to the standard, even if it is taken immortal medicine, it is useless. If you don't take immortal medicine, just keep doing good deeds, although you won't become an immortal immediately, you can also avoid the disaster of sudden death.
I even suspect that Peng Zu and these people can't ascend to Heaven because their good merits haven't reached the standard.
