Aluminum is second only to steel in production and consumption worldwide, and has become the second largest metal on which humans depend.

Aluminum is a silvery-white light metal that does not exist in nature in elemental form, but in the form of chemical compounds. Aluminum has the characteristics of light weight, low price, excellent thermal conductivity, easy processing and strong corrosion resistance, and is widely used in aviation, transportation, electronic power and construction.

The electricity used in the production of electrolytic aluminum in mainland China mainly comes from two categories: thermal power and hydropower.

In order to reduce costs and improve efficiency, the production of electrolytic aluminum in areas with low thermal power or hydropower costs has become an inevitable choice. As a standard bulk commodity, electrolytic aluminum has almost no difference in quality and price among companies, so the competition between companies mainly revolves around cost.

From the perspective of the industrial chain, the aluminum industry chain includes six core links from bauxite mining to the manufacturing of end products, mainly including: bauxite mining--- refining of alumina--- smelting of aluminum--- production of aluminum alloys--- processing of aluminum---- and finally the manufacture of end products.

The production raw materials and production processes of the aluminum industry chain are relatively simple, bauxite is the main raw material for the production of alumina, and alumina is the only raw material for the production of electrolytic aluminum. More than 90% of the world's alumina is produced using the Bayer process (i.e. alkali process), while all primary aluminium is produced using a molten salt electrolysis process.

From the perspective of geographical distribution, the global electrolytic aluminum production capacity is relatively concentrated. As the world's largest supplier of electrolytic aluminum, Continental occupies a leading position in the world in terms of production capacity and output. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the global electrolytic aluminum production capacity will reach 77 million tons in 2022, of which China's production capacity will be 44 million tons, accounting for 57.1%.

From the perspective of market competition pattern, the concentration of electrolytic aluminum industry is relatively high. According to Mysteel's statistics, the world's top 15 electrolytic aluminum producers accounted for 65% of the world's total production in 2022.

There are seven companies on the list, namely Aluminum Corporation of China (including Yunnan Aluminum), Hongqiao, Xinfa, State Power Investment, Oriental Hope, Jiugang and Shenhuo, which together account for 37% of the world's total production. In addition, domestic electrolytic aluminum layout manufacturers also include Zhongfu Industry, Jiaozuo Wanfang, Tianshan Aluminum and Nanshan Aluminum.

The production capacity of electrolytic aluminum in mainland China is mainly distributed in the northwest and southwest regions, showing relatively concentrated regional characteristics.

According to the data at the end of September 2023, the northwest region accounted for more than 30% of the country's electrolytic aluminum production capacity, and the southwest region accounted for 20%. In addition, North China and East China each have about 17% of their production capacity.
