Gonghexin Road connects from Suzhou Creek Bridge to Chengdu North Road in the south, and connects to Fuchuan Road in the north from Fuzaobang Bridge. The total length is 11.13 kilometers and the width is 17 to 45 meters. Along the road, there are mainly factory areas and workers' residential areas. Its southern section was built in 1920 and was named after the South Cross-Shanghai-Nanjing Railway connecting to Gonghe Road. From 1957 to 1959, Gonghe New Road was extended to the north, and industrial zones were built on both sides.
There is also a story about this road in Shanghai: the only mountain in Taicang - the 50-meter-high Chuanshan was razed to the ground in the fifties of the last century, and a road was opened; Blowing up a mountain and building two roads really seems like a legend, but in fact, the section of the roadbed that was extended by the Republic New Road in the fifties of the last century is indeed a stone through the mountains and into the "sea".
The brilliant road connects a number of industrial pearls
During the implementation of the Second Five-Year Plan in 1958, the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal People's Committee (i.e., the Municipal Government) decided to build the Pengpu Industrial Zone, which is mainly based on mechanical and electrical industries, in the Pengyuepu area of Zhabei Province, covering an area of 5.5 square kilometers, including Shanghai Metallurgical General Machinery Factory (now Pengpu Machinery Factory), Shanghai Huatong Switch Factory, Shanghai Sifang Boiler Factory, Shanghai Lifting and Conveying Machine Factory, Shanghai Hydraulic Machinery Factory, Shanghai Paper Machinery Factory, Shanghai Xinzhong Power Machinery Factory, Shanghai Metallurgical Mining Machinery Factory, Shanghai Blower Factory, Twenty-five backbone enterprises such as Shanghai No. 1 Machine Tool Factory and a large number of small and medium-sized factories have moved in from other districts, becoming one of the main mechanical and electrical industrial bases in Shanghai and an important base for the export of mechanical and electrical products. The new road of the republic is like a necklace, connecting a group of industrial pearls.

Living this new village was one of the first workers' new villages
In the 90s of the last century, the once glorious factory suddenly fell into the cold, and the jobs that had been held for decades were gone. Seeing the former Pengpu Industrial Zone disappear step by step, there is no choice but to fall. What used to be a factory building has become a high-rise building. The corresponding Pengpu New Village is only one bridge away from the Pengpu Industrial Zone. When it was established in 1958, it was originally a staff dormitory in Pengpu Industrial Zone, but at this time it showed a scene of one thing and the other.
From the map, the green and pink areas were surrounded by farmland at that time
In a reminiscence article written by Wu Xudan, he said: Back then, Pengpu New Village was basically a wasteland. Ponds, small fields, mounds, small hills. On weekends, my father would often take me to the depression to catch pheasants, pluck white calluses, and pick wild vegetables......
The laughter of childhood is scattered in every corner of Pengpu. In my student life, my good memories always stay in the dumplings in the noodle shop at the entrance of the alley, the various snacks in the commissary, and the fried rice cakes of the grandmother at the school gate......"
"Four neighborhoods, three roads, two traffic lights, and two bus lines" were once the portrayals of Pengpu New Village, one of the earliest workers' new villages in Shanghai. At that time, a young man like the "big factory of the whole people" like Pengpu Machinery Factory was the favorite marriage partner of the Shanghai girl.
The earliest Pengpu New Village is actually near Wenxi Road, which is the source of the old Pengpu New Village.
Pengpu New Village, which began to be planned and built in 1959, was prepared by the Municipal Planning Institute six times over a period of 26 years.
After the completion of Pengpu New Village, it underwent two geographical expansions in 1980 and 1984, demolishing 12 natural villages and building new village houses and greenery.
In the mid-1990s, Pengpu New Village was still planned and built in accordance with the concept of a workers' new village, until the surging construction of commercial housing changed this process.
By 1994, there were 158,000 residents in Pengpu New Village, making it one of the largest residential areas in the city, with complete facilities, convenient transportation and beautiful environment.
In the decades since the planning and construction of Pengpu New Village began, there are still many country roads, and even out of a residential area, when you turn around, you will see a small piece of Qianmo, and then when you turn around, you will see a pigsty, which can be described as a mixture of urban and rural areas.
It was not until 1978 that Pengpu New Village was included in Zhabei District, and the residents' hukou was changed from suburban to urban. However, even in the 80s of the last century, "at that time, there was a lot of farmland around, there were not many houses, and at night I heard frogs always croaking".
"Old Pengpu" said Pengpu
Mr. Chen Lijun, who moved here from Chengdu Road in 1972, recalled:
"Pengpu is a place that no one really wanted to come to before. Because there are no carriages, only carriages!
I remember when I was a child, probably when I was in junior high school, Shanghainese people said that after Tianmu Road, it was a suburb. Pengpu is all farmland, so only when it comes to catching crickets and fishing, will they come to this place. Those Chenguang are quite gimmicky. ”
"Forty years ago, except for the village of Pengpu, the rest of the place was still fields, and there was a river, and on the other side of the river was the head of the grave.
Therefore, Pengpu New Village was our first piece, which is actually the four committees of Peng 1, Peng 3, Peng 5, and Peng Qi, which are divided into four blocks according to the southeast, northwest, and northwest. Others were later called Pengpu New Village, but they were not authentic, and it can only be said that this area was the Pengpu area.
When I came in 1972, I was assigned a four-story house, a brick house, not a wooden structure. Now Peng Yi and Peng San are still this type of house, and the roof is neither tile nor flat roof, but a piece of prismatic plate, which is very informal. ”
"This type of room is relatively short, and it is quite stuffy to live in. The long axis room, there is no bathroom, and the kitchen is shared by three families. If you want to go to the toilet, there is only one public toilet on the first floor. ”
But even so, Pengpu people still like Pengpu, they feel accustomed to the neighbors to greet the cold and warmth, accustomed to the early morning shuttling through the streets and alleys, running briskly, accustomed to the good mood or bad mood, wandering around the noisy night market streets, shopping around, accustomed to the sadness, staying in the old shop to order a drink, watching the crowd of people......
Important events in the past 30 years
In the past 30 years, many important events have happened here: the disappearance of the Pengpu Industrial Zone, the layoff of a large number of workers, the rapid expansion of Pengpu New Village, the rise of the Shibei New Industrial Zone and Daning Intercity, the completion of the first light rail and the 10th People's Hospital, and the abolition of Zhabei District. The industrial structure along Gonghe New Road has also undergone great changes, completing the transformation from traditional manufacturing to modern service industry and information industry, and many commercial buildings have been built on both sides of the road. New Shanghainese account for a large proportion of the people walking on Gonghe New Road today, and many of them are college students, depicting the bright future of Gonghe New Road.
