Why don't you take your baby to be "a big fish in a small pond"! This Harvard study subverts the Chinese concept of parental education...

Happy New Year, everyone. Here, all the colleagues of Little Peanut give you New Year's greetings. I wish the big peanuts and little peanuts a prosperous and prosperous Year of the Dragon!
On the first day of the Lunar New Year, we would like to share with you two very interesting stories
(One of them is about school choice)
, the story contains a very wonderful life truth.
This truth is: many times, instead of worrying about chicken babies, cultivate "small fish in a big pond"
(Go to prestigious schools, big institutions, and do popular things)
, it is better to relax and encourage the baby to become a "big fish in a small pond"
(Go to ordinary or less popular schools, institutions, and do what you like).
The story comes from the world-famous social sciences

stories, especially fascinating,
The author combines a Harvard study to illustrate through two stories,
People often can't look at whether a thing is "good" or "bad" dialectically, and people make many choices, such as "choosing a school" and "choosing a career", and the judgment criteria they rely on are too single and biased...
After the New Year, everyone will start to work hard for the growth and future of their children. In fact, what determines people's sense of achievement and happiness is often their own view of the world, which is really called "existence in a thought".
Today's article may change our perception
, it can be said that Chinese parents "send their babies to prestigious schools".
The concept of education is the opposite
...
Children and we will all face the question of whether to be a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond.
Let's see, how do we choose?

The first story
Be a big fish in a small pond
The choice of the Impressionists
150 years ago, Paris was the center of the art world. Every evening, a group of painters meet at the Café Garpova. The leader of this small group was Manet in his early thirties, Manet's friend was Degas, Cézanne was a tall man with a bad temper and always sat melancholy in the corner, Monet was very stubborn, he was the son of a grocer and had little education, Monet's best friend was Renoir, and the spiritual leader of the group was Pissarro, who was a very principled man.
Together, this group of remarkable painters created a modern art genre – Impressionism. Today, you can see their paintings in major museums around the world. But 150 years ago, they were in trouble, and no one was interested in their paintings. Art critics are mostly belittling them. At the time, the group was faced with a key question: should they attend this year's Paris Fine Arts Fair?
"Impression: Sunrise", Hiroshi Mona
Art played an extremely important role in the cultural life of France in the 19th century. Painters were seen as a profession as doctors and lawyers today. If a painter wants to have a future, he should first study at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he or she receives a formal and rigorous education, where he first copies his paintings and then learns to paint models. There are competitions at every stage of education. Those who don't draw well will be eliminated. The pinnacle of painting is the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition, the largest art fair in Europe.
Over the course of six weeks (from the beginning of May), about 1 million people came to visit the fair. The winners will become famous, and the value of their work will rise. And those who lose can only go home in a huff and continue to work hard. To be famous as a painter, you must first have your work selected for the exhibition, and then, you must also win an award at the exhibition.
The painter Jules Holzafi shot himself in the head because he had not been selected for the 1866 Paris Fine Arts Exhibition. "The jury rejected me, so I was untalented," he wrote in his suicide note, "and I had to die." "For 19th-century French painters, the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition was everything.
Living in such an era, exhibitions were as important as the Impressionists. However, the works of the Impressionists were not easily accepted by exhibitions.
The judging criteria for the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition are very traditional and must conform to common artistic conventions, and the paintings that can be awarded medals are large, finely painted canvas paintings, either French history or mythological stories, depicting horses, troops and beautiful women, such as "The Army Sets Out", "Young Woman in Tears with Letters", "Abandoned Innocents"...
The Impressionists, on the other hand, had a completely different understanding of art. They all depict pictures of everyday life, and their painting styles are completely different. To the judges and the general public, their paintings did not even look professional. Even if the works of the Impressionists were occasionally selected for the exhibition, they would not be placed in the main section. In general, at the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition, the works of the Impressionists were rarely exhibited, and even if they were exhibited, they were rarely recognized.
The Paris Fine Arts Exhibition is the world's largest art exhibition. The Impressionist painters who gathered at the Café Gherpois agreed with this statement. But to be recognized by the fair's jury comes at a cost: they have to create works of art that they don't think make sense, and that are likely to drown out in the jumble of other painters' work. Is it worth it?
The Impressionists were debating fiercely: should they continue to participate in the exhibition, or should they stick to their own principles and hold their own exhibition? Do they want to be small fish in the big pond of the exhibition, or do they want to be big fish in the small pond of their own choice?
Eventually, the Impressionists made the right choice and created their own exhibitions, so that today you can see their paintings in museums around the world.
This similar dilemma arises again and again in our lives, and often none of us are able to make an informed choice. We try to be the best, desperately trying to squeeze into the best institutions. But we seldom stop to think, like the Impressionists, which institution will bring us the most benefit? The most common example is choosing a university.

The second story
Be a big fish in a big pond
A school choice for girls who love science
Carolyn Sachs attends public schools. Singing in the church choir when she was a child, she loved to write and draw, but what she was really interested in was science.
"I used to lie on the grass with a magnifying glass and a sketchbook, observe the insects, and then draw them. "I'm particularly fascinated by insects. Yes, and sharks. Science is a big part of my life. ”
When Caroline was in high school, she was always at the top of her class. She got good grades in every college course she took in her pre-university. In the summer of her sophomore year of high school, her father took her on a tour of the prestigious American universities. She loves Brown University, an "Ivy League" university in Rhode Island. So, she applied to Brown University, and her alternative was Maryland State University (46th overall ranking in the United States in 2024).
Luckily, she was accepted to Brown University (No. 9 overall in the nation in 2024).
"When I got there, I found that everyone was just like me, full of curiosity, nervous and excited. Caroline said the school made her feel like she was in heaven.
Brown University vs. University of Maryland, was Carolyn Sachs the right decision? Most people think it's the right one.
Brown University is an Ivy League school, while the University of Maryland is her alternative. Compared to the University of Maryland, Brown University has more resources, better students, greater reputation, and higher quality faculty, and is significantly ahead of the University of Maryland in the rankings.
Emma Watson, the actor in Harry Potter, graduated from Brown University
Now that we have already described how the Impressionists viewed the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition, we will now consider Caroline's decision from the same perspective.
Whether to participate in the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition or hold their own special exhibitions was discussed by the Impressionists for a long time without any results. They know that it is not a question of which option will be better, but rather that the two options are fundamentally different, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The Paris Fine Arts Exhibition is like an Ivy League school. This is where visibility is built. It's special because of its prestige and strict selection criteria, and that's where its problem lies. The Paris Fine Arts Exhibition is a big pond. In this show, it's hard to stand out, and in the vast majority of cases, you're destined to be just a small fish.
Pissarro and Monet disagreed with Manet, who believed that it made more sense to be big fish in small ponds. They said that if they held their own exhibitions, they would not have to be bound by the rules of the Paris Fine Arts Fair. They can paint as much as they want without drowning in the crowd. As a result, their independent exhibitions were successfully held. Today, you're going to have to buy the work they're exhibiting in this exhibition, and it's going to cost a lot of money ...
The Impressionists inspired us that, at some point, it was better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond, and that outsiders in a marginal world seemed to be at a disadvantage, but it turned out to be not a disadvantage.
Caroline Sachs was faced with the same choice. She could choose to be a big fish at the University of Maryland or a small fish at one of the world's most famous schools, she chose the Paris Fine Arts Exhibition, and in the end, she paid a big price for her choice.
The moment she was accepted to Brown University, she knew that college was not the same as high school. Yes, it can't be the same. She is no longer the smartest student in her class. She accepted the fact. However, the difficulty of the chemistry course was far beyond Caroline's imagination, and on the advice of her professor, she had to retake the course in her sophomore year, but the progress was not great.
In the spring of her sophomore year, she took organic chemistry as an elective. It turned out even worse. She had no idea how to take the class. When the teacher asked a question, the students around her raised their hands, and Caroline could only sit there in silence, listening to the talented answers of her classmates. "I felt so stupid at the time. ”
One day, she stayed up late to prepare for the organic chemistry class. She was bitter and angry. She didn't want to be watching organic chemistry at three o'clock in the middle of the night, and even if she did, she wouldn't necessarily make any progress. "I think that's when I started to feel like I shouldn't have gone in this direction anymore. "She had enough and gave up continuing her studies in the field and gave up doing scientific research.
"I love insects! I wanted to study them, so I drew them all in a sketchbook, marking every part of my body. I know where they live and what they do. I'm interested in human beings, and how the human body works ... And now I'm giving up on the subject because I feel like I've failed completely... ”
Actually, it didn't matter much how well Caroline did in organic chemistry class, right? She didn't want to be an organic chemist. It's just a course that many people find difficult. Also, Caroline studied organic chemistry at a very competitive university. If you were to rank the number of students studying organic chemistry in the world, Caroline would most likely be just one of the ordinary majority.
But the problem is that Caroline is not comparing herself to the students of the world who study organic chemistry, she is comparing herself to her classmates at Brown University. She was a small fish in the deepest, most competitive pond in the United States, and her self-confidence was shattered by comparing herself to other smart classmates. She felt stupid, even though she wasn't stupid at all.
The danger of large ponds
Harvard's "Fishpond Study"
The big fish in a small school is better than the small fish in a famous school
Caroline's experience is all too common. Many people think that it is better to go to a prestigious school, but this is not the case, and there are pros and cons to the results.
In the U.S., more than half of all students enter college with science, technology, and math (better known as STEM), only to be abandoned in their first or second year. In the modern world, despite the financial value of earning a science degree for young people, most students eventually switch to liberal arts because liberal arts majors are less academically demanding and less stressful to do with coursework.
To figure out what students give up, and why, let's take a look at the number of science students enrolled at Hartwick College in upstate New York, a small liberal arts college (outside the top 100 in the national rankings of liberal arts and sciences, and no data in the overall rankings).
Based on the scores on the math test, we divide Hartwick College STEM students into three categories: excellent, moderate, and poor. It is shown below. The score is taken from the American Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which is used as an entrance test by many schools in the United States, with a maximum score of 800 in mathematics.

Now let's take a look at the percentage of STEM degrees earned by Hartwick's three categories.

It can be seen that the students with the worst math at the time of admission are slowly giving up on pursuing STEM degrees. Among the top students, 55% got their wish.
Now let's take a look at Harvard's data on this. Harvard students scored much higher on the SAT in math than Hartwick students, and in fact, Harvard's poor students scored higher in math than Hartwick's top students.

If getting a STEM degree correlates with how smart you are, then almost all students at Harvard University can get a degree, right? Let's take a look at the percentage of STEM degrees earned by Harvard students in all three categories.

Isn't it strange that Harvard students earn STEM degrees at about the same rate as Hartwick College.
Stop and think about it. Let's call Hartwick's "Hartwick excellers" with STEM degrees, and Harvard's "Harvard underachievers."
Most of the "Hartwick Honors" got what they wanted, became engineers and scientists. At the same time, many of the "Harvard undergraduates" have given up their science majors. "Harvard latecomers" are small fish that live in big, scary ponds. The "Hartwick Honors" are some of the big fish that live in cozy little ponds.
It seems that the key to determining whether you can get a STEM degree or not is not how smart you are, but how smart you feel in your class compared to the rest of your classmates.
I would like to say in passing that this is a truth when choosing a school – you don't care too much about a school's prestige and academic standards.
Let's go back and think about how Carolyn Sachs chose Brown University and the University of Maryland at the time. She could benefit from Brown University's fame. She can meet more interesting and wealthy classmates at school. The network she built at school and the prestigious university degree she earned should help her find a job in the job market. That's all the benefits of big ponds. Brown University is the Paris equivalent of the Fine Arts Exhibition.
But she also has to take a certain risk. She is more likely to give up her science major altogether. According to research by Mitchell Chang of the University of California, all things being equal, a 10-point lower average SAT score increases a student's likelihood of getting a STEM degree by 2 percent. The smarter your classmates, the more stupid you'll feel, and the more stupid you feel, the more likely you'll be to give up science.
The average SAT score difference between freshmen at the University of Maryland and Brown University is 150 points. The price for Sachs to give up a good college and choose a prestigious university is that her chances of getting a STEM degree are reduced by 30 percent.
At that time, it was difficult for liberal arts school graduates to find a job (and even more so now), while a student with a STEM degree was guaranteed a good job. Graduates with science degrees and engineering degrees have many job opportunities and good pay. Therefore, coveting the fame of an Ivy League school is a big risk.

Is it our school that is letting our students down, or are students letting our school down?
Neither. No one disappointed anyone. Elite schools are a grand world for top students, but a dilemma for those who are not top students. This is another explanation of Caroline's college experience. The Great Pond admits very bright students, but it also makes them depressed.
By the way, do you know which school discovered the "threat theory of the big pond effect"? Harvard University!
In the '60s, Fred Grapp was the school's director of admissions, and he implemented the famous "Happy Bottom Zone" strategy. After taking office, he wrote:
"No matter how good a class is, there are always some people who are at the bottom. What is the psychological impact of feeling mediocre in such a class with so many strong players? Can people be "happy" in this bottom area?
For Granpe, it's his job to identify students who are strong enough to survive the pressure. As a result, Harvard began to study a large number of gifted students who were academically capable at the bottom of the class. The conclusion shows that if someone is cannon fodder in the class, it is likely that he will be a good player on the football field. It seems that even if you are a small fish in a big pond, you have to find some kind of psychological balance.
Entering the Big Pond ended with mixed results. However, when choosing a school, parents will still tell their children to try to go to the best schools, and we always take it for granted that there are more opportunities in the big pond. We have our own definition of strengths, but that definition is wrong.
And the result? We made mistakes. We underestimate the room for development of things that seem to be disadvantaged. Often in small ponds, you will get the most opportunities to get what you want.
When Caroline Sachs applied to the school, she had no idea that she would reduce her chances of getting a science degree. And now she knows. At the end of the conversation, I asked her what would have happened if she had chosen to go to the University of Maryland — to be a big fish in a small pond. Without hesitation, she said, "I will have more confidence in myself and will most likely stay in science." ”
Child:
The purpose of this article is not to say that children should lower their expectations of themselves and avoid challenges, nor that they will not be able to improve themselves in a stronger competitive environment after entering the "big pond".
After reading this, I guess you think the same as I think, the so-called "big fish in a small pond", at the moment for those of us who have a baby, is to help children avoid the competitive environment of "over-rolling", but still choose to work hard and not lie flat (otherwise, even in a small pond, how to become a big fish?)
It's actually a strategic choice in life.
Avoiding vicious competition and giving full play to their own advantages and environmental advantages in the "small pond" is often more conducive to the child's growth into a "big fish", and after becoming a "big fish", the probability of success may be greatly increased if you try to further try the "big river".
Everyone needs to find an environment that suits them and where they can feel happy and grow every day. In 2024, I wish my dear flower friends, dear "little peanuts", to be happy and progressive.
