Since October last year, the Beijing police have received a number of reports of insurance defrauding middle-aged and elderly people. After receiving a call claiming that they could upgrade their policies, the police were defrauded of the insurance money on the pretext of handling business.
Mr. Zhai, 70, who lives in Beijing, received a call from someone claiming to be a customer service staff member of an insurance company. The other party told Mr. Zhai that the policy he had purchased before could now be upgraded, but he had to come to the company to handle it in person.
When Mr. Zhai came to the company, the company's employees told Mr. Zhai that there was now an insurance product with higher yields that could help him transfer to a new product, and then took Mr. Zhai's mobile phone to operate.
A few days later, Mr. Zhai found that his policy had not been upgraded, but had been loaned out of the policy, and Mr. Zhai was inexplicably saddled with a loan of 100,000 yuan.
Ms. Liu, who lives in Tianjin, and her wife also suffered a similar situation. After receiving the call from this company, they rushed from Tianjin to the company's location to handle the policy upgrade business.
Ms. Liu said that the company's employees also completed the so-called policy upgrade by assisting Ms. Liu in operating her mobile phone, and later found that her bank card was more than 50,000 yuan less.
Targets of criminal gangs
Most of them are middle-aged and elderly people over 50 years old
After contacting the official customer service of the insurance company, the police learned that the company involved in the case did not belong to the official after-sales service and did not have the qualifications to handle insurance business. How do they target their victims?
According to a briefing by the police of the Criminal Investigation Corps of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, members of these criminal gangs used illegally obtained victim information, mainly insurance policy information and ID numbers, to impersonate the after-sales service departments of regular insurance companies, and invited these victims to their offices and tricked the victims into handling the fictitious financial management business of the insurance company under various pretexts, such as handling policy dividends and rebates or that the insurance policy was wrong.
After the incident, the police visited more than 30 victims one by one, and found that most of the victims were middle-aged and elderly people over 50 years old, and they were not familiar with the insurance business procedures and the use of smart phones.
The criminal gang took the victim's mobile phone into their own hands to carry out some operations, and then transferred the money from the surrender or pledge of the operation policy to the company's account by swiping the card at the POS machine.
There are four categories of criminal gangs
A clear division of labor to commit fraud
After more than half a month of squatting, the police locked up 3 gangs that defrauded insurance funds, and on December 19, 2023, they carried out a centralized arrest of 3 criminal gangs in 10 places in 5 provinces including Chaoyang District of Beijing and Dali City of Yunnan Province. Through investigation, the police found that the gang involved in the case was mainly divided into four categories of personnel, and each had a clear division of labor.
These gangs that defraud the elderly of insurance benefits are divided into four types of personnel: outbound callers, salesmen, store managers, and bosses. The outbound call is responsible for pretending to be the insurance company to contact the victim by phone, the salesman is responsible for receiving the victim to trick the victim into transferring the insurance money to the company's account on the grounds of receiving subsidies for policy upgrades, the store manager is responsible for handling the victim's complaints to the police, and the boss is responsible for leasing office space to distribute the stolen money.
At present, 28 suspects including Li have been criminally detained by the police on suspicion of fraud. Further investigation is ongoing.

Beware of pension fraud "agent surrender" traps
This type of fraud is a typical pension fraud "agent surrender" trap. After fraudsters illegally obtain the victim's insurance policy information, they use words to trick the victim into handling the so-called "policy upgrade" and other businesses, and take advantage of the fact that some middle-aged and elderly people are not familiar with the insurance business procedures and the use of smart phones, and encourage the elderly to surrender the insurance policy and buy the so-called "high-yield" wealth management products by slandering insurance products and promising higher returns. After the elderly fall into the trap, the criminals not only charge a high fee for "agency rights protection", but even embezzle the surrender funds of the elderly, and the elderly and their families should pay special attention to prevention.
How to prevent it
First of all, don't be gullible when you receive a strange phone call, and check with the insurance company as soon as possible.
Secondly, be vigilant when meeting offline and don't let strangers operate your phone.
Finally, if you find that you have been deceived, you should call the police on 110 as soon as possible.
