According to the patent drawings submitted by Ford, the new tailgate lid is folded when assembled, which is completely flush with the upper edge of the tailgate, and will not obstruct the driver's view from the rear windshield to the rear. When the tailgate lid is unfolded, its front edge is raised to a height just below the roof, while the rear edge is basically unchanged and slopes, raising the boot storage space while taking into account aerodynamics.
It is understood that the control system of this tail box lid will be connected to part of the vehicle's sensor signals, so as the cover will be raised or lowered according to the driving speed. Ford intends to use special adapters and hollow bolts allowed by regulations to be installed, allowing the new mechanism to be combined with the existing structure in the body, allowing for a non-destructive modification.
