Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Education issued a notice on the issuance of the "Guiding Professional Guide for Serving the Health Cause and Cultivating Talents in the Health Industry".
The guidelines propose to meet the major needs of the country and serve the new trend of health and health industry development, and set up five guiding majors for the cultivation of new medical talents: (1) medical device and equipment engineering, (2) geriatrics and health, (3) health and medical security, (4) drug economics and management, and (5) biomedical data science.
As early as 2021, the official website of the Ministry of Education announced the "Reply to Recommendation No. 9284 of the Third Session of the 13th National People's Congress", and in the next step, the Ministry of Education will further strengthen geriatric education for all medical students, and at the same time, cooperate with the National Health Commission to encourage colleges and universities to strengthen the construction of geriatric medicine disciplines and promote the standardized training of geriatric specialists.
The above reply mentioned that the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission attach great importance to the construction of geriatric medicine discipline and the cultivation of geriatric medical talents. In 2017, the former National Health and Family Planning Commission and 13 departments including the Ministry of Education jointly issued the "13th Five-Year Plan for Healthy Aging", which requires strengthening the construction of geriatric medicine.
Regarding the proposal to set up undergraduate majors in geriatrics, the above reply pointed out that according to the Regulations on the Administration of the Establishment of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities promulgated by the Ministry of Education in 2012, new majors that are not included in the professional catalogue shall be formally approved by the Ministry of Education after being declared by the university, the competent department of the university shall convene a meeting of experts to organize and deliberate on the evaluation of the major setting, and the expert committee on discipline development and professional establishment of the Ministry of Education shall review and approve the establishment.
