The worst form of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in history, commonly known as avian influenza, has emerged in remote Antarctic regions, putting bird populations such as penguins, endemic to Antarctica, at risk of extinction.
Experts have detected the avian influenza virus in a brown skua on Bird Island in South Georgia, a British overseas territory. Around the same time, the virus was found in tube-nosed weops and albatross in the nearby Falkland Islands.
