Toyota recalls 1.12 million vehicles! The subsidiary has just been exposed to collision data fraud

Toyota's shares fell 5.6% at one point in early trading on Dec. 21, the biggest one-day drop in the Japanese stock market since May 2022.

According to a report by Reuters quoted by China-Singapore Jingwei on the 21st, Toyota recalled 1.12 million vehicles due to potential airbag problems.

Toyota Motor said on Wednesday that it would recall 1.12 million vehicles worldwide because a short circuit in sensors could prevent airbags from deploying as designed, according to the report. The dealer will inspect and replace the sensor if necessary. Toyota plans to notify owners of the recall starting in February.

According to reports, the recall covers models from 2020 to 2022, including Asian Dragon, Camry, Corolla, Rongfang, Lexus ES250, ES300H, ES350, Highlander, Sena and other models.

The report also mentioned that Toyota recalled 3,500 Rongfang vehicles in the United States in July 2022 because of potential interference between internal parts that could lead to false detection of OCS sensors.

According to CCTV News, Japan's Kyodo News Agency said that Toyota announced on the 20th local time that it would stop shipments of Toyota brand cars such as ROOMY and PROBOX produced by Daihatsu.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency said that the third-party committee investigating the quality violations of Daihatsu Industries issued a report on the 20th, and the objects of quality violations were expanded to almost all models, including Toyota and other company brand vehicles, and there were 64 models with violations.

Daihatsu, a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, has decided to stop shipping all models sold in Japan and overseas, and Toyota has also suspended shipments of some models.

According to the report, the above-mentioned third-party committee said that it had newly discovered 174 violations, including false records in documents, and the target models also included cars supplied to Mazda and Subaru on an OEM basis. All 11 models currently on sale, including Daihatsu's Tanto, 8 models including Toyota's RAIZE, 6 Subaru's models, and 2 Mazda models have been halted due to violations of regulations. The non-compliance also concerns discontinued models.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that the company has been exposed to non-compliance. According to the Daily Economic News, earlier in 2023, Dafa was also exposed to illegal operations involving car door trims and car side impact safety tests.

In May 2023, Daihatsu Motor announced that in order to cope with the side impact test, the front seat door trim of its four models has been "improperly modified" to minimize the risk of testing, so as to avoid the possibility of sharp edges inside the door when the side airbag is deployed in an accident and cause injury to passengers.

In fact, this is not the first time that Toyota's subsidiaries have had problems with data fraud. In August 2022, Hino Motors (i.e., Hino Motor Vehicle Co., Ltd.) officially announced the results of an investigation by a special investigation committee composed of outside lawyers and other parties into the scandal of engine exhaust emissions and fuel consumption data falsification that was revealed on March 4 this year.

According to the results of the investigation, Hino's misconduct can be broadly divided into three areas, including violations related to engine emissions, violations related to fuel consumption data, and the submission of false reports by Hino Motors in 2016 when the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism investigated exhaust emissions and fuel consumption data. Among them, Hino Motors' exhaust emissions-related violations began at least 2003, a time node much earlier than Hino Motors' previous announcement of 2016, nearly 20 years ago.

In the wake of the Hino car fraud scandal, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism revoked the production license of the vehicle in question, a measure for the first time in Japan. At the same time, Hino Motors has recalled more than 46,000 vehicles.

According to CCTV Finance and Economics, in early November 2023, Toyota and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Daihatsu Industries, recalled a total of nearly 600,000 vehicles. According to Japanese media reports, the reason is that the fuel pump produced by Denso, Japan's largest auto parts manufacturer, is defective, which may cause the vehicle to stall while driving.

Toyota recalls 1.12 million vehicles! The subsidiary has just been exposed to collision data fraud

It is worth mentioning that while its subsidiaries were exposed to quality violations and data fraud, according to CCTV News, Toyota Motor Corporation announced on December 20 local time that about 1 million vehicles sold by the company in Canada and the United States need to be recalled due to potential quality problems with airbags.

Toyota Motor Corp. said the recall involves a series of Toyota and Lexus vehicles with model years from 2020 to 2022. The sensors in the front passenger seats of these vehicles may be short-circuited due to a manufacturing problem, causing the airbag system to not determine the correct weight of the occupant, and there is a risk that it will not be able to open in a collision.

Previously, on November 22, Toyota Motor Corporation recalled two models totaling more than 580,000 vehicles in Japan due to problems such as the unstable installation of the pedal of the foot-operated handbrake, which may lead to the inability to use the handbrake function normally. This is the second recall in November. It is understood that these two models are not sold in the Chinese market.

From the perspective of the domestic market, according to the news released on the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation on December 21, a few days ago, FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation in accordance with the requirements of the "Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products" and the "Implementation Measures of the Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products". It has been decided to recall some bZ3 electric vehicles manufactured between March 13, 2023 and November 9, 2023, a total of 25,815 units, with immediate effect.

Due to the imperfect program of the power battery management controller for some vehicles within the scope of this recall, the remaining power estimate deviation of the vehicle is too large when the vehicle is not fully charged for many times and continues to drive at high speed, and the remaining power of the power battery displayed by the instrument is higher than the actual remaining power. In extreme cases, the vehicle loses power before the charging warning light comes on, which is a safety hazard.

FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. will upgrade the control program of the battery management controller for the vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge through vehicle remote upgrade (OTA) technology to eliminate potential safety hazards.

Affected by the combination of the above events, Toyota's share price fell 5.6% in early trading on December 21, the largest one-day decline in the Japanese stock market since May 2022. US) fell 2.18% on December 20 and continued to fall after hours.
