As consumers, how should we choose? Today we focused on selecting three, Geely Great Wall and BYD, to make a comparison.

It is said that there are three, in fact, it can be divided into two categories, one is BYD's single-gear ECVT plug-in hybrid system, and the other is the multi-gear DHT plug-in hybrid system, although they are both dual-motor series-parallel hybrids, but there are great differences in design ideas.

Single Gear VS Multiple Gear: Who Is Better?

BYD's plug-in hybrid models all use a single-speed ECVT shift mechanism, with only one gear, which is completely electric in the low-speed state, and only in the high-speed state, the engine will intervene to assist in driving the vehicle.

It is said to be ECVT, but it has nothing to do with CVT at all, in fact, it can be understood as a combination of several sets of gears, this single-gear hybrid mode, the structure is relatively simple, leaving enough space to arrange a high-power drive motor. In non-high-speed conditions, it is infinitely close to the extended-range electric, and at high speeds, it will be connected in parallel or directly driven by the engine.

The multi-gear DHT plug-in hybrid, that is, on the basis of the dual-motor series-parallel hybrid, a group of DHT gearboxes is added, the Great Wall DHT has two gears, divided into high-speed gear and low-speed gear, in the low-speed gear, the engine intervenes at a speed of 35-40km/h, in the high-speed gear, the engine intervenes at a speed of 70-80km/h; Geely's Thor hybrid system is a three-gear, compared with the DHT of the Great Wall, it has one more engine in 20km/h to intervene in the drive of the first gear.

Why add two to three gears, simply put, is to better play the performance of the engine, improve the power performance, for example, at 35-40km/h, through the power direct drive gear, let the engine intervene to improve the dynamics. At speeds above 70 per hour, the economic direct drive gear intervenes to improve fuel economy, compared to BYD, which only intervenes when it is at high speed cruising or feeding, and the multi-gear DHT scheme is more flexible in the way the engine intervenes.

Design ideas: partial oil car VS partial electric car

Judging from the structure and working principle of the two of them, their design ideas are completely different. BYD's design ideas are more radical, while Geely and Great Wall are relatively conservative.

Compared with the 1st gear direct drive, the 2nd gear and 3rd gear can improve the power and economy at the same time, so that the engine has more room to play, especially in some rapid acceleration conditions, in addition to the intervention of the engine is more radical and flexible, and also reduces the probability of stalling.

However, the premise that multi-gear DHT is better than single-gear plug-in hybrid is that there is no price to pay for increasing gears. However, the actual situation is that adding a group of DHT gearboxes requires increased costs, more complex mechanical structures, more difficult tuning, and easy to bring frustration problems. Many multi-gear DHT plug-in hybrid models drive like a fuel vehicle under many working conditions.

If you look at the idea of electric vehicles, BYD's thinking is more radical, handing over more work to the motor, and giving the role of the motor to the extreme, the engine only undertakes a small part of the work, which greatly reduces the work burden of the engine, and the medium and low speed is no different from the electric car, the structure is simpler, and the cost is much lower.

But there are also disadvantages, the disadvantage of the constant speed gearbox is that the engine can only be directly driven at medium and high speeds, and the medium and low speed of other feeds is in series, at this time the power of the engine must keep up, otherwise it is easy to cause stalling, and the fuel economy is theoretically not as good as the multi-speed DHT scheme (only in theory, the actual fuel economy is affected by a variety of factors).

Seeing this, in fact, the conclusion is very clear, the two schemes, there is no one who must be stronger than whom, each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the reason why BYD's plug-in hybrid sells well, in addition to the first-mover advantage, is mainly because the cost is lower, and the value of all technologies is ultimately reflected in the product, and the reason why I am optimistic about the range extender is also because the multi-gear plug-in hybrid scheme is difficult to compete with BYD's single-gear hybrid in terms of cost.
