Although AC Milan have been empty of four major competitions in Europe and domestic competitions this season, thanks to increased sponsorship fees and some potential player trading income, they can still scrape together a budget of 120 million euros this summer window that is the same as last year, and the recruitment is no longer about quantity, but on finding Giroud's successor.
In the 2023 summer window, Milan spent a total of 114 million euros to sign 10 new signings, including Christian Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek and Reinders. This was mainly due to the €87.9 million they earned from reaching the Champions League semi-finals (excluding ticket revenue) and the €70 million they received from cashing out Tonali, while the RedBirds' net investment was actually only €44 million.
This season, Milan has been empty in the Champions League, Europa League, Serie A, and Coppa Italia, and the revenue from the competition is naturally not the same. The Champions League has earned a total of 48 million euros in prize money and 6.6 million euros in the Europa League, which is 33.3 million euros less than last season.
Although the losses in Europe were huge, Milan made up for it in other areas. The first is that locking in second place in the league has given them €16.8 million, around €4 million more than last season's fourth-place finish. This was followed by a year-on-year increase of 35 million euros in sponsor revenue, with the largest increases being Puma, Emirates and MSC. These two revenues made up for the losses in Europe.
The transfer of players will also bring a lot of money to Milan. Bologna are in the Champions League for the first time in their history and will be bolstering their squad in the transfer market on top of a generous bonus. According to Italian media analysis, Boruto's permanent signing of Saale Markles is almost a certainty, and the Milan loan winger has contributed four shots and two passes this season and has a high attendance rate. The Rossoneri could get €10 million from Sama's buyout.
De Ketelaere is another player who is almost certain to be bought out. The 23-year-old Belgium international has scored 13 goals and provided nine assists in 45 appearances, making him one of the most involved players in Atalanta's squad this season. Team chairman Perkassi has previously admitted that he will give CDK a long-term contract.
It is worth mentioning that De Ketelaere still have two titles to fight for this season, one is the Coppa Italia final against Juventus and the other is the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. The Belgian has a buyout fee of €23 million, with a floating clause of €4 million, with Milan enjoying a 10% share of the secondary transfer.
Even if they ignore the €16.8 million in league place bonuses, €80 million in TV broadcast revenues and home box office revenues, and only add up Milan's European revenue, sponsorship growth and transfer revenue, they can still scrape together 120 million euros, which can be fully invested in the summer window.
This summer window is set to be busy for Milan, as they first negotiate with Stefano Pioli in an effort to convince him to waive or reduce his final year's salary of €4.5 million, and then sign a new coach before the transfer window opens to set the tone for the next signings.
Unlike in the previous summer transfer window, this year Milan are no longer blindly pursuing the number of signings, but are concentrating on three or four additions in the central striker, midfielder and back positions. In particular, after Giroud officially announced his departure, they will invest at least 60 million euros in the central striker position.
Zirkze remains the top target, with the Dutch international currently valued at over €60 million and Salemakles likely to join the deal directly. Leipzig's Sesko is the second target, with the 20-year-old Slovenian currently on the market at around €65 million, although that could soar to over €80 million with Manchester United and Arsenal stepping in.
