I felt like I couldn't stay in the engineering industry for long, and I either left voluntarily or was forced to leave

Everyone who does engineering project management knows that they are not afraid of losing a project, and they are most afraid of a major safety accident.

In 2014, I was responsible for a project with a contract price of 25 million, and I lost money at that time, but the boss did not get angry because of the loss of the project, but said: It's okay to lose money, the project can be successfully completed and accepted, and there are zero safety accidents, which is a success!

The contract duration is six months, but for this

I felt like I couldn't stay in the engineering industry for long, and I either left voluntarily or was forced to leave

The project, including the preliminary work, we did it for about two years. After the project was accepted, I did a rough cost calculation and made a small loss. I calculate the costs that can be seen, in fact, there are many hidden costs of doing projects, it is difficult to calculate in detail, the visible costs are small losses, if you count the sunk costs that cannot be calculated, it is even more loss. Generally speaking, if the project loses, the boss will be furious and like to scold the construction team for being ineffective, so he should reflect on and summarize. But at our summary meeting, the boss did not do this, because he knew that the project span is long, difficult, and a variety of professional cross-construction, although we have postponed the construction period, but from the start to the completion, there is no safety accident, which is not easy.

However, in recent years, the more projects I have done, the more I feel afraid, no matter how much I attach importance to safety, what three-level education, on-site safety disclosure, and even require to do morning pre-construction disclosure every day, it is difficult to eliminate unsafe behaviors on site.

The most common unsafe behavior on the construction site is not to wear a safety helmet, and then the foundation pit is not sloped according to the requirements, nor is it supported according to the requirements, the soil is more arbitrary, and the fire and electricity are not according to the specifications, which are almost the behaviors that are prone to accidents are ignored. So that whether it can be successfully completed depends entirely on luck.

On a project in Zaozhuang, we repeatedly demanded that we must wear a helmet, and we must wear it whenever we enter the construction area. As a result, the nephew of the team leader had an accident first. He did wear a hard hat when he was working, but when he sat under the eaves to rest, he thought that there was an eaves blocking him and took off his hat, but unexpectedly, a piece of iron fell from the sky, hit the scaffold and bounced to the top of his head, sewed several stitches, and rested for more than half a month. It didn't take long for the team leader to sit under the equipment without wearing a helmet, and he suddenly sat up in a hurry, and as a result, he hit the sharp corner of the angle steel, and made a hole in his head, and rested for several days.

Let's imagine how funny and hateful it is for the uncle and nephew to wrap a white cloth around their heads at the same time in the team! The construction site must wear safety, and there is really no room for carelessness, even if it is in the house, and a small probability event will really happen. For example, one time, in the Yibin project, when I brought the technician into the site, we were in the house, and he was hit on the head by an iron block that bounced in through the window. The helmet was smashed into a hole, and if there was no helmet, it would be another safety accident.

In another project in Zhejiang, during the construction of the factory area, the construction team did not check the flammable and explosive materials within the construction area, and the fire started. Unexpectedly, one day, the discarded oil drum in the workshop leaked oil to the outside of the wall, and the welding slag fell down and caused a fire. I almost burned the entire workshop, but fortunately I found it in time.

In the Nanning project, a worker fell from the scaffolding, fortunately it was only on the second floor, the situation was not serious, and the person only broke bones. However, because 120 was called, it also alarmed the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau, and the suspension of work for rectification was indispensable. Every day they say that they can't sit on the scaffold, but some people don't listen. What can you do?

What makes me most apprehensive is that the year before last to dig a foundation pit more than 4 meters deep, I have obviously made a confession, and also asked them to sign, the soil layer is unstable, and a layer of support must be dug to support a layer. As a result, they dug directly to a depth of 3 meters, and excavated almost vertically, without any support, and when the surveyors and a worker went down, the soil layer next to it had already shown signs of instability, and the clods kept falling down, which made people feel shocked. When I heard the noise, I immediately called someone to come up and stop work for rectification. In less than ten minutes, one side of the foundation pit collapsed.

Then we came up with a rectification plan, but they still did not build according to the rectification plan, and they made a temporary support plan, and unfortunately they were seen by the inspection team, and they were almost notified by the city. In the end, we wrote a rectification book of several hundred pages.

After this incident, I was really convinced, and I was really afraid.

If this continues, either I will voluntarily quit the industry, or I will be fined out of the industry one day.
