The French scholar Emile Amelino may well be the greatest sinner for the destruction of Egyptian antiquities. He spent five years at the um Kabo site in Abydos (the birthplace of the Menes family, the founders of the First Dynasty, see Figure 3), using "violent" excavations, smashing most of the "similar" objects to pieces, and he did not draw a plan for any of the cemeteries, nor did he record the location of any of the excavated objects.
