Capybaras are a large rodent that lives in South America, and it is somewhat similar in appearance to rabbits and mice, but much larger.

Adult capybaras can reach 1-1.35 meters in length, about 0.6 meters high at the shoulder, weigh between 30-60 kilograms, and the largest can even reach 70 kilograms.

Capybaras are mainly found in southern Brazil, Bolivia, northern Argentina, and parts of countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, and Paraguay in South America.

They mostly live near rivers, lakes and other waters, and outside of these places of origin, if you want to see capybaras, you can only go to zoos or capybara breeding bases, for many people, capybaras are still relatively unfamiliar animals.

Capybaras are very interesting, they are social animals, usually 10 or more capybaras live together, they are friendly with each other, and there are few fights.

When in danger, capybaras can quickly burrow into the water for refuge, their diving time can reach more than 5 minutes, they can swim long distances underwater, and the mating behavior of capybaras is mostly completed in the water.

Surprisingly, capybaras are not only friendly with their own kind, but also very friendly with other animals, and in the area where capybaras live, there are also many turtles, baby monkeys, otters, rabbits, small birds and other animals, which will often snuggle up to rest on the capybara, and sometimes even ride on the back of the capybara to play, and the docile capybara will not mind.

The most surprising thing is that even the highly predatory crocodiles can coexist peacefully with the capybara, which usually does not attack the capybara for no reason.

It turns out that through the observation and research of zoologists, the feces pulled out by the capybara are rich in crude protein, which is the favorite "snack" of some other animals.

Capybaras eat most of the day, they feed on aquatic plants, capybara's digestive system is efficient, can digest food quickly, some food after passing through the digestive tract, the protein in the cells is not fully absorbed and utilized, these undigested proteins are excreted from the body, become nutrients coveted by other animals.

As a result, the keen crocodile learns that as long as it does not harm these capybaras, it can get the high-protein feces they pull out, which is undoubtedly a more relaxed food source than directly preying on the capybaras, so the crocodiles will tolerate the presence of capybaras and get along with them friendly.

Of course, not all carnivores are as "smart" as crocodiles, jaguars and jaguars still prey on capybaras directly for food, preferring fresh capybara meat rather than eating feces that have already been excreted from their bodies.

The capybara's docile character and high-protein feces make it very popular in the animal kingdom and can get along with all kinds of animals, so it is affectionately called "the courtesan of the animal kingdom", it does not compete with other animals for food, and has rich feces to share, so it is easy to make friends.

Capybaras spend most of their day foraging in rivers or lakes, swimming, and also playing with other animals, when it is too hot, they will roll in the water to cool down, and when the weather turns cooler, they will climb ashore to forage in the morning and evening, capybaras have barrel-shaped bodies covered with soft and warm brown fur, they have webbed feet, which can help to move flexibly in the water.

When the capybara mates in the water, the gestation period of the mother capybara is 5 months, and a litter can give birth to 4-5 baby capybaras, and the newborn capybara cubs cannot swim and can only hide in the bushes on the shore.

Before they grow into juveniles, they face threats from predators and are very vulnerable to predation by foxes, vultures, dingoes, etc., and when the lucky baby capybara grows into a cub, it can live with the adult capybara.

Capybaras have a lifespan of 8-10 years in the wild and can live up to about 12 years in captivity, but in recent years, the number of capybaras in the wild has declined, mainly due to overhunting.

In order to obtain capybara fur and meat, humans hunt capybaras in large quantities, and now some countries have enacted laws prohibiting capybara hunting, and the capybara population has gradually stabilized.

The docile and cute capybara is full of charm, and I hope that humans can strengthen protection, so that this cute "animal courtesan" will no longer face the threat of extinction and continue to live happily in nature.
