Venezuela's Ministry of the Interior announced to international media on 31 January that security forces had successfully captured a group of so-called "terrorist organizations" backed by the opposition. The group, armed with high-performance sniper rifles and carrying a large number of bullets, attempted to murder President Nicolas Maduro. Fortunately, however, the security forces detected and thwarted the assassination in time. Through the review of the members, they revealed that the leader of this terrorist group was National Guard Colonel Palomo. The colonel has been radically dissatisfied with the status quo in Venezuela and has tried to unite other military personnel to topple the Maduro regime. After the outbreak of the Venezuelan crisis, Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president, and Palomo followed suit, unconditionally supporting Guaidó to become the acting president of Venezuela.
Following further scrutiny of members of the "terrorist organization", Venezuelan security forces were provided with important information. The backer behind this assassination of the president was Julio Borges. Borges, who served as president of Venezuela's Justice Party, secretly plotted the assassination of President Maduro last August. When the matter was revealed, Borges fled to Colombia. Intelligence shows that Borges established contacts with Colombian intelligence after his exile in Colombia. That sparked speculation that Colombian intelligence may have backed plans to assassinate Maduro.
However, this incident does not involve Colombia alone. The role of the United States is also interesting. On January 28, U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton sent an important signal to the outside world, announcing that the United States plans to deploy 5,000 U.S. troops to Colombia in response to a possible Venezuelan crisis. US President Trump has repeatedly mentioned that the possibility of the use of force is not ruled out. There are credible sources that if the Maduro government uses the military to suppress protests, the US government will send special forces and drones to assassinate Maduro.
These circumstances show that the United States has played an important role in Venezuela's civil unrest. Before 2014, the Venezuelan people enjoyed a relatively prosperous life, but since 2014, the United States has used a variety of measures to suppress international oil prices, resulting in a sharp decline in Venezuela's oil export trade. In addition, the United States imposed an economic blockade and political isolation on Venezuela, turning Venezuela from a rich country to a poor country overnight. Today, Venezuela is facing internal and external pressures, with internal divisions, external forces intervening and people suffering. The roots of all these problems can be traced back to the actions of the United States, which has made the United States a chaotic maker of the world order.
