The battle for Mariupol is nearing its end, and the remaining Ukrainian troops in Mariupol are still trapped at the Azovstal plant for the last resistance. However, on March 28, the Russian flag was raised from the Mariupol City Hall building, marking the end of the campaign. The key to this victory lies in the efforts and heroism of the "Somalia" battalion, the Donetsk armed Internet red unit. The unit was founded by Mikhail Tolstek (codenamed "Givi"), a Ukrainian boy who was also a militia commander in East Ukraine.
Givi was a diesel loader truck driver before the unrest in East Ukraine, however, when fighting broke out in Slavyansk, he actively participated and showed leadership. He met Motorola, a militia commander from Russia, and formed the "Somali" battalion. The force is made up of local youths who are reluctant to accept foreign command, and who use Somali pirates as a symbol and wear tattered clothing and use irregular weapons to conduct guerrilla warfare.
The leadership and command ability of the Somali battalion was quickly recognized and won a large following online. They are adept at using media interviews, forming partnerships, and producing shows to attract traffic. However, over time, relations between the Somali battalion and another East Ukrainian militia unit, the Spartan Battalion, broke down, but this did not affect the friendship between them.
In 2016, Motorola was tragically killed, and the Somali battalion gradually transformed from an Internet celebrity force to an ordinary force. Despite the many difficulties and losses they experienced during the war, the Somali battalion remained at its post and maintained high morale.
However, fate seems to have shown no mercy on the Somali battalion and their leader, Givi. Givi was assassinated in 2017, and his sacrifice brought great grief and mourning to the people of Donetsk. However, his spirit lives on and inspires the Donetsk militia to fight for their homeland.
The new leader of the Somali battalion, Timur Kurikina, took over the banner of Givi and led his troops to continue fighting in Mariupol. Despite heavy losses and low morale among the troops, they moved forward with determination and fought for victory.
Now, the Somali battalion is carrying out its final clearance operation in Mariupol. They searched the city for the remnants of the Ukrainian army and worked hard to attack the Azovstal plant. It is an uphill battle, but the Somali battalion will not give up easily, they will hold their posts until the last moment.
