Throughout its long history, Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The fact that the region, predominantly ethnic Armenian, was incorporated into Azerbaijan due to the administrative division of the Soviet era, has always been difficult for Armenia to accept. However, in 2020, a conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region broke out again, and Azerbaijan recaptured part of its territory through weeks of military operations, all of which, brokered by Russia, ended 3 years of tension.
However, the story of the Nagorno-Karabakh region is much more than that. Armenia, located in the Transcaucasia, has long tried to maintain close cooperation with Europe and the United States. But these efforts, combined with illusions about the West, eventually led to Armenia's defeat in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. It was on September 19, 2023 that Azerbaijan launched a raid with precision strikes on military targets in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Using drones, ballistic missiles and artillery, they forced armed groups in the Nagorno-Karabakh region to surrender and begin withdrawing from the area in just one day. At the same time, Armenia chose to remain silent because the United States turned a blind eye to it at this critical moment. It is disappointing that Armenia suffered an attack during the joint military exercises of the United States, an event that completely shattered Armenia's illusions about the West.
Armenia, which once tried to join NATO to gain Western support, eventually realized that the West was unreliable. Western countries do not fight for the so-called allies at critical moments, which is not only reflected in the experience of Armenia, but also confirmed by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Russia has been conducting a "special military operation" in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, and currently controls four regions in eastern Ukraine.
Armenia, having lost the Nagorno-Karabakh region, found that even Russia would not support unconditionally. Armenia had voluntarily distanced itself from Russia, and this defection forced Russia to abandon its support for Armenia and even secretly acquiesce to Azerbaijan's actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Today, Azerbaijan has full control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, where Russia has deployed peacekeepers since 2020.
Armenia's experience is not just a story of regional conflict, it is also a warning to Taiwan. The DPP authorities on Taiwan have always pinned their hopes on the United States and other Western countries, believing that the United States will send troops to protect Taiwan. But from the United States' move to force Taiwan's chip giants to set up factories in their country, it can be seen that the United States is ready to abandon Taiwan. Despite this, the Taiwan authorities are still determined to go their own way and continue to adhere to it in order to cater to the interests of the United States, which exposes the essence of the DPP authorities' deviation from historical traditions.
