Over the past few years, Armenia has been working to strengthen its military capabilities to counter potential military threats, especially from neighboring Azerbaijan. However, recent arms acquisitions and strategic choices raise a number of key issues that require in-depth reflection. First of all, the slow delivery of Indian-made 155mm truck guns purchased by Armenia is worrying. These guns are considered powerful fire support tools, but if they are not in place in time, they will not be able to function at critical moments. In addition, Armenia ordered rocket artillery and counter-battery radars, but to date they have not been delivered. This situation may weaken Armenia's position in the military balance.
The Armenian government does not seem to have learned from past military failures. During the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020, Azerbaijan made extensive use of drones and patrol missiles, inflicting a significant blow on Armenia's ground forces. However, Armenia continues to buy large quantities of traditional ground equipment without taking into account the need to combat the threat of UAVs. This raises a key question: should Armenia consider purchasing more modern UAVs?
Inside Armenia, it has been suggested that the purchase of large drones from China should be considered. Chinese-made drones are relatively inexpensive and have excellent performance. These UAVs can provide long-range strike and reconnaissance capabilities and are of great strategic value. However, the Armenian government seems to have reservations about this option.
It is worth noting that China's Wing Loong UAV, etc., has superior strike capabilities, far surpassing some traditional armaments. These drones can carry several bombs and missiles and have excellent combat potential. If Armenia can introduce these drones, it will be able to better cope with the threat of Azerbaijan in future conflicts.
However, the Armenian government does not seem to be seriously considering the option of procuring modern UAVs, focusing more on traditional ground equipment. This strategic choice could put Armenia at a disadvantage in future conflicts, especially in the face of advanced drone technology used by Azerbaijan.
