Fifth, the treatment of branches
1. Buds
Pine trees are different from other tree species, natural growth of pine trees, as the tree continues to grow, the outer branches and leaves are more and more luxuriant, close to the trunk of the side branches because of the outer branches of the shelter, it is difficult to obtain sunlight and rain, so it began to turn yellow and fall off, a large number of fallen branches will become bald branches, only the end of the end has needles, so that the entire tree structure is loose. In the black pine material embryo, such bald branches or over-long branches are often encountered, which are not ideal in the future bonsai modeling, and can be solved by pruning and forcing buds.
Every year after the Spring Festival, the author cuts the buds that have just emerged in front of the branches at the right time to make them appear adventitious at the roots of the branches (this method can only be used for black pines that have grown luxuriantly for more than three years). After the adventitious buds have grown, remove the conifers in front of the branches so that the adventitious buds grow rapidly. Special attention should be paid to the fact that when pruning and forcing buds, there must be growing conifers, and leafless branches cannot germinate and bud.
For some thicker bald branches, it is often difficult to force buds, or it takes a long time to cut back multiple times to force buds. Therefore, in normal times, especially during the vigorous period of pine tree growth, the branches of the pine tree should be properly pruned to control the advantages at the top of the branches and promote the growth balance of the whole tree to ensure the normal growth of internal branches and needles. Some of the needles are removed when pruning and forcing buds, so reduce fertilization and maintain a nutritional balance.
Based on my many years of experience, this work must be carried out during the conservation of materials. Because pine trees tend to grow vigorously when planting, they will have a great effect when pruning. If you prune and then prune after the pot, it is difficult to germinate new branches, which will prolong the time of bonsai modeling.
2. Carving buds
When the black pine material is planted in the ground, it is often encountered that the conifers are not plump enough, and the green part of the material is too small, thus losing the beauty of the black pine.
In practice, the author encounters branches cultivated for many years, in order to make them more side branches, every two years to engrave buds, stimulate their more bud heads, easy to cultivate and shape later. Cut off the strong shoots of the pine tree, retain the weak buds, thin the branches, ventilate them to the sun, and remove the negative branches and leaves of the branches, retaining the yang side and the upper conifers. After the bud is carved, a new bud head will grow at the root of the old coniferous leaf, which will increase the thickness of the pine tree in the future cultivation, and the density of the pine conifers will be further increased, which is convenient for more trade-offs in the future potting shape.
3. Grafting
Some black pine branches are difficult to appear adventitious buds, which can be solved by grafting. Grafting can also speed up the molding of bonsai and achieve a multiplier effect with half the effort.

The grafting of black pine must be carried out during the growth period. The author generally chooses to implement it in March every year, because at this time the cells of the black pine bark formation layer are the most active and divide fast, which is conducive to grafting into life. When grafting, note that the scion and the forming layer of the rootstock must be aligned and tightly tied.
In order to make the water of the scion not easy to lose, the scion must be wrapped in a plastic bag, maintain a certain humidity, and after grafting into a live, the plastic bag must be removed. Scion is best to take its own bud head, more easy to live, grafting should be as flat, accurate, fast, strict and tight technical requirements, which can greatly improve its survival rate.
6. Carving during the curing period
Most of the black pine bonsai materials have artificial sawing or severed heads, which affects the beauty of bonsai. Through carving, it is possible to remove artificial traces, turn ugliness into beauty, and retain the natural beauty of trees.
The author generally carries out black pine carving in July to August, because at this time the black pine enters the summer dormant period, after carving, the black pine sap will not flow out in large quantities, and then in September and October, the black pine enters the next growth period, which is convenient for the healing of wounds after carving and safely enters the winter.
When carving black pine, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the trade-off of the relics according to the situation. There are not many relics of pine trees, and some embellishment can be done. However, when carving for the first time, the texture of the villa is larger, which is convenient for the fine carving after the pot is set later.
When the black pine saw section is processed, it is necessary to follow its texture and try not to leave knife marks, as if it is formed by natural creation. Fracture marks and wound edges can be processed into irregular shapes, which should not be too round and too regular, otherwise they will appear stiff and unnatural. In addition, the scar should be as narrowed as possible so that it can heal later.
The author introduces several methods commonly used in my own practice:
Use sharp knives and axes to cut off the trunk of the tree, causing damage and accelerating the aging of the tree. Such a method is mostly used in direct dry materials, but the split part cannot exceed one-third of the trunk, otherwise it will affect the growth and repair of the material. Chiseled stems or branches cause changes such as undulations and bumps, but should be carried out according to the dynamic of the tree type, otherwise there will be a man-made notch phenomenon.
Use a carving knife to carve the xylem to make it more natural and reasonable to make it unsatisfactory. The carving knife is used to further carve the branches of the tree, making it more in line with the natural French meaning of ancient dryness. Special movements are carved around the wound in the cortex to facilitate healing at the wound site. Tearing hand tongs along the wood grain, tear off part of the bark or wood fibers, so that the branches are vigorous and natural.
