Daily Species Story | Black Truffle: I am a food and medicine dual-use mushroom known as the "gold underground"

author:Zixi County Rong Media Center

The trade name of a class of truffles with large black ascomycetes is black truffle, which has a unique fragrance and is expensive, and is known as "black diamond in the kitchen", "underground gold" and "god's food", which has extremely high economic value. Not only are they recognized as top ingredients, but their medicinal value is also in the spotlight. It has been reported that the black truffle ascomycete fruit is rich in protein, amino acids, truffle polysaccharides, α-androsanol, ceramides and aromatic compounds and other biologically active substances, which have the effect of enhancing immunity and anti-aging.

In August this year, residents of Qaraqin Banner in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, when collecting poplar mushrooms in poplar groves, they stumbled upon a reddish-brown object with a surface like lychee skin and potato tubers growing in the soil layer under the dead branches and leaves, and the researchers confirmed it as a very valuable food and drug dual-use fungus, the immature ascomycete fruit of Truffle Fungus Taiwan. The bacterium is one of the members of black truffles. This is also the second time that this precious wild edible mushroom has been found in Inner Mongolia after the discovery of Taiwan truffles in Ningcheng County, Chifeng City in 2018. Truffles from Taiwan have been found in Inner Mongolia, which is of great significance for the geographical distribution, origin and evolution, symbiotic tree species and even artificial domestication of this species.

Habitat of Truffles taiwanese

In China, the currently known distribution areas of Truffles Taiwan are Taiwan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Jiangsu, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Jilin. Overseas, it is mostly distributed in Japan. Some people inoculated with the spore suspension of Taiwan truffles with Qinggang oak sterile seedlings, formed mycorrhizal seedlings, afforested under artificially improved soil conditions, and after 8 years of cultivation, ascomycetes of Taiwan truffles grew under the tree. Therefore, the researchers suggest that edible mushroom practitioners use mycorrhizal technology to carry out artificial planting experiments, if successful and industrial development, will open up a new way to get rich.
