Recently, in the port of Szczecin, Poland, the first batch of 14 M1A1 FEP "Abrams" main battle tanks and 3 M88A2 "Hercules" armored repair vehicles in the United States were officially handed over to the Polish Armed Forces Army, and these M1A1 FEP tanks will soon enter service with the 18th Mechanized Division of the Polish Army. Poland signed an order with the United States for 116 M1A1 tanks earlier this year.

The M1A1 Fire Augmentation Project (FEP) tank is the latest modification of the U.S. M1A1, originally intended for use in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and the USMC M1A1 FEP has a combat weight of 61.3 metric tons (67.6 US tons), is armed with a 120 mm M256 smoothbore gun, operated by a four-man crew, and the tank is powered by a 1500 hp AGT-1500 gas turbine. Poland's M1A1 FEP is currently the best version of the US export configuration,

The M1A1 FEP tank features an upgraded gun-commander's main sight (GPS) second-generation forward-looking infrared thermal imaging system (SG FLIR), integrated Eye-Safe Laser Rangefinder (ELRF), North Pointing Module (NFM), Remote Target Positioning (FTL) capabilities, and a precision lightweight GPS receiver (PLGR).

The M1A1 FEP tank has also been upgraded with a new Steering Alert (STC), the Stable Commander's Weapons Station (SCWS), which is part of the Abrams Integrated Display and Targeting System (AIDATS), with Thor's color HD daytime camera and improved Thermal Imaging Sight Module (TSM), and the Commander has a new color DCM display. The STC SCWS weapon station has been upgraded to provide commanders with a new Tank Commander One-Hand Handle (TCSH), which, combined with the AIDATS display sighting system, gives the M1A1 FEP a certain level of "hunt-kill" capability.

The remaining upgrades to the M1A1 FEP Modified Kit include the new Improved Side Armor Package (ISA), the 77-ton Abrams Suspension Upgrade (ASU), the 4th Generation Tail Compartment Ammunition Rack, and the Ammunition Data Link II (ADL II) fire control upgrade.

For the Polish version of the M1A1 FEP, the improved Foreign Military Sales (FMS) armor package was applied instead of the depleted uranium heavy armor package (HA) on the original M1A1 FEP. The Improved FMS Armor Pack uses depleted uranium-free materials for use by all foreign export users, and the turret serial number on the left side of the turret will have the Ē suffix to distinguish it from the original U.
