【Competition】Poznaniu Szyca Stadium Renovation – a new green development in the city center

Szyca Stadium is a special place. The building itself was built for the 1929 National Exhibition. Warta Poznań's players were supposed to train on it, but it was not approved for use due to construction defects. In the 1950s, it was completely modernized and used as a club stadium until 1995. For five years, the owner of this degraded building has been the Poznan magistrate. The announced competition is mainly to give this place a second life.

The 10-person jury consisted of: landscape architect Izabela Małachowska-Coqui (chairwoman), city architect Piotr Sobczak, municipal conservator Joanna Bielawska-Pałczyńska, Anna Gawrysiak-Knez from the Wilda Housing Estate Council, Joanna Grocholewska, representing the Society of Polish Town Planners, architect Bartosz Jarosz from the Wielkopolska Chamber of Architects, Adam Kijowski from the Municipal Urban Studio, architect in Poznań, Jacek Krych, representative of the Katowice SARP, Łukasz Mikuła from the Council The City of Poznań and Dariusz Wielinski, Rector of the Poznań Academy of Physical Education.

We expect participants to take a revolutionary approach. We wanted the designers to show us how to develop the vision of the area. As jurors, we wanted to see how designers would deal with the natural environment that developed there. The theme of water, green and blue infrastructure, as well as the treatment of existing buildings, is also important – said Izabela Małachowska-Coqui, president of the jury, in announcing the results.

Wilda Park in the place of the Szyca stadium

First place went to Fikus Studio (the team consisted of: Michał Fikus, Anna Fikus-Wójcik, Magdalena Andrzejczuk and Magdalena Kujawa). The judges especially appreciated the clear compositional arrangement with clearly marked axes and the way the stadium was connected to the Warta Valley.

The author divides the entire area into areas for different purposes. At the heart of the concept is the interior of the stadium, on which a cistern and a picturesque winding wooden platform are created. This so-called area of passive leisure and natural contemplation, with well-preserved vegetation on the embankment. Since the stadium was the place where Poznań Jews were executed during World War II, the designers also planned a memorial space – a platform with a memorial to the victims of Jewish labor camps, symbolically pointing to Jerusalem. The reconstruction of the grandstand to the north and west can also be accessed from the pedestrian bridge, from where you can enjoy the observation decks to the east and south. They explained that in the south of the stadium, a pedestrian bridge takes walkers to recreational spaces with a slight lowering designed for people with disabilities.

Around the stadium embankment, the designers planned an active recreation area with walking and cycling paths and a rooftop plaza for various purposes, and at UL. Dolna Wilda, the representative district, with its wide Poplar Avenue, is a continuation of the existing layout of Plaza Righteous International and Hoffman Square. In this zone, greenery is formed and shaped by people. In the middle part of the avenue, under a lightweight membrane roof, the possibility of organizing local festivals or markets has been raised, a tribute to the pre-history of Targowisko Bema, but it can also be an element that makes the park more attractive, integrating the inhabitants of the area. An interesting solution, the architect suggests, could be a cyclical market of crops from the surrounding distribution gardens.

Thanks to the ideas collected in this competition, we can have a beautiful place in the city center of the future. Contrary to typical sports facilities that experience a very high level of emotions, we will come to the Szyca Stadium to calm these emotions and relax in nature - announced by the Mayor of Poznań, Jacek Jaśkowiak, when announcing the results.
