#Volkswagen Emissions Gate#The US penalty for Volkswagen "Emissions Gate" is not over. The Volkswagen Group has previously been fined more than $20 billion in the U.S. for emissions scandals, but that doesn't exempt it from local and state penalties.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton recently said that Volkswagen Group and its Audi subsidiary have reached an $85 million settlement in principle over violations of Texas environmental law over its diesel cheating scandal. Paxton said the settlement stipulates that the German automaker pays $85 million in civil penalties for its illegal acts. This also means that the subsequent penalties for Volkswagen's "emission gate" incident are far from over, and it is understood that at least ten states are currently engaged in similar lawsuits.
The "emissions gate" incident began in 2015, when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) discovered that Volkswagen and Audi installed a software on the diesel vehicles they sold that could reduce exhaust emissions when detected and return to normal levels while driving.
