Unfortunately, the Records of the Shan Hai Jing for Emperor Yan himself are also very critical, and basically have not been described positively, so the image of Emperor Yan in ancient mythology is very vague. Relatively more, however, it involved emperor Yan's descendants and children.

For example, Yao Ji, whom we broke up before, was the younger daughter of the Red Emperor (generally believed to be the Red Emperor or The Yan Emperor), and later transformed into the Goddess of Wushan.
There is also a more famous, Jingwei in the story of Jingwei Reclamation, whose original name was Nuwa (note that it is not Nuwa), who is also the daughter of Emperor Yan. In addition, there are BoLing, the famous Zhu Rong, the water god Gonggong, the son of gonggong Houtu, the son of Houtu, the son of Houtu, the god of time choking, and so on.
Including Xuan You, whose prestige was the loudest and whose name shook the history of ancient mythology, he was also the leader of the second-level unit under Emperor Yan.

With so many famous descendants and subordinates of Emperor Yan, why are there only a few records in the Shan Hai Jing. Even the four great gods of much lower rank, such as the spring god Jurman is the head of the bird body, and the autumn god harvest is the head of the tiger body, all have certain descriptions in the Shan Hai Classic. Zhu Rong, as a descendant of Emperor Yan, and is an auxiliary god of Emperor Yan as a great god of the south, the number of appearances in the book is innumerable, and as a supporting role, it is much more brilliant than the protagonist, which is really difficult to understand. Thinking about it, if there is a bit of conspiracy theory, it can only be speculated that the Yellow Emperor and the Yan Emperor fought a big war in Banquan, after all, the final victor was the Yellow Emperor. There is an old saying that history is the history of the victors... The latter things everyone made up for themselves, not much to say.

Anyway, the records of Emperor Yan in the Classic of Mountains and Seas are rarely true, so there are almost no mythological stories. The mythical stories of those descendants, except for a few (such as Zhu Rong), most of the endings are not very gratifying.
For example, Yao Ji, after her death, became a goddess of Wushan after her soul was immortalized into Yao Cao. Unexpectedly, he was deeply teased by the two generations of monarchs of the later Chu State, and his reputation was miasma. If it weren't for Du Guangting, a high-ranking Daoist of the late Tang Dynasty, who had pulled her along, Emperor Yan, the daughter of a defiled divinity, would not have been able to turn over even if she hadn't been able to turn over in a thousand years. Fortunately, Yaoji herself also fought for anger, resolutely stood with the toiling masses, and finally was re-supported by the common people on the altar and became a goddess who has been famous for eternity.

Another example is another daughter of Emperor Yan, who was said to be an accident and drowned in the East China Sea. This incident, whether it is for Emperor Yan himself or the female baby, can be called a tragic thing. As we all know, after the death of the baby girl, she transformed into a sacred bird guard, and every day she picked up stones from the West Mountain to fill the East Sea that drowned her. Although this story embodies the fearless spirit of Jingwei who does not accept defeat, the story itself is still permeated with some tragic desolation, and every time I think of Jingwei who runs day and night without results, I can't help but produce a kind of sympathy and sadness in people's hearts.

Another example is the work of the water gods. We have told a lot about the story of the co-worker, as a descendant of the Yan Emperor, he once fought a battle with the descendants of the Yellow Emperor under the seduction of floating. In the end, he did not beat anyone else (of course, the floating of the chaotic courtiers and thieves played a crucial negative role), and he knocked down Buzhou Mountain in one breath. This impulsive act led to serious consequences, the west fell under the sky, and the waters of the world flowed east. Fortunately, there is a ruin in the depths of the East China Sea, and the water that flows to the East Sea has flowed away from the bottomless pit of the Gui Ruins, otherwise, the many tribes of Dongyi, which once dominated the history of ancient mythology, are estimated to be unlucky. All of this always gives people an impression: Emperor Yan himself has few records, and his descendants either do not write, and the vast majority of what is written is either sad or back.

Zhou Yili said very clearly that Shennong and the Yellow Emperor were in a relationship between the front and the back, shennong declined, and the Yellow Emperor followed closely behind. As for how the transition was made during this period, there is no clear statement, but judging from the two most important divine wars in ancient times: the Battle of Hanquan and the Battle of Zhuolu, if Shennong and Yandi were the same person, it was obvious that it should be a process of armed struggle to win victory. The protagonists of the Battle of Hanquan are emperors and emperors, and the protagonists of the battle of Zhuolu are the first leaders of the second-level units under emperor Yan, Xuan You and the Yellow Emperor, so it can be roughly inferred that it should be: The first battle of the Yan Emperor lost, and the Yellow Emperor took the initiative; and Xuan You was not convinced to come to a second battle, lost again, the game ended, the Yellow Emperor knocked down the opponent KO and won.
After Zhou Yi, the Shangshu, which had been lost for more than 2,000 years, was resurrected from a batch of Warring States bamboo janes unearthed, which recorded: "The book of Fuxi, Shennong, and the Yellow Emperor is called the "Three Graves". This text is very important, confirming the statement that Zhou Yili Fuxi, Shennong, and the Yellow Emperor went down to the throne.

In the Shiben - Three Emperors Benji, it is said: "Emperor Yan, in the name of the fire official,...... Cultivated marriage, hence the name Shennong. ”
Although The Yan Emperor and Shennong are equated here, there is a very subtle difference between the Shennong clan mentioned in it and not the Shennong. Shennong is likely to be talking about a group, while the emperor is obviously an individual.
Next, let's look at what Mr. Sima Qian's historical records say. Mr. Sima Qian has always written history rigorously, basically not nonsense, and the terrible thing is that many archaeological discoveries in later generations have confirmed it: any history that is different from Mr. Sima Qian's history is correct.
In the "History of the Five Emperors", it is said: "At the time of Xuanyuan (that is, the Yellow Emperor of Xuanyuan), the Shennong clan declined, and the princes invaded each other, and Shennong Could sign. ”
There are two important pieces of information here: first, Sima Qian also recorded Shennong, which coincided with Zhou Yi and Shangshu; second, Shennong and the Yellow Emperor were indeed in a relationship between the front and back feet, which also confirmed the records in Zhou Yi and Shangshu.
In addition, what is slightly different is that the Yellow Emperor here is not a role to confront Shennong, but a role to support justice. The princes fought with each other, making the people miserable, Shennong had already declined, and it was estimated that there was nothing that could be done to take the princes, so the Yellow Emperor stepped forward and said: I will handle this matter! As a result, the disobedient princes were taken care of.
The historical record also mentions that Xuan You was in rebellion, and the Yellow Emperor put Xuan You at peace. Therefore, in the ancient history, Xuan You did appear as a character who took the initiative to fight, and eventually failed.
Sima Qian also said in the historical record: "And the princes Xianzun Xuanyuan was the Son of Heaven, and the Shennong clan was for the Yellow Emperor." ”
That is to say, the princes who did not obey and make trouble were all subdued, and the princes who did not make trouble were obedient when they saw Xuanyuan so powerful, and they were obedient when they looked at it. Anyway, everyone obeys, then you come to take over the Shennong clan to be the co-lord of this world, this matter is also a matter of course.
Obviously, in Sima Qian's records, the handover process between Shennong and the Yellow Emperor was not a process of armed seizure of power, but a glorious process of conforming to the will of the people and the expectations of the people.
The Battle of Hanquan is mentioned in the chronicles, and it is written that it was a war between the Yellow Emperor and the Yan Emperor.
"Fight with Emperor Yan in the wilderness of Hanquan, fight three battles, and then win his will."
So if you look at the background of this story, Emperor Yan should not be a member of the Shennong clan, but a member of the "troublemaking princes". Or it is the one who voted against it when he admired the Yellow Emperor as the co-lord of the world. Then if Emperor Yan and Shennong are really one person, then the records of the Battle of Hanquan also have contradictions, is it that when the Yellow Emperor was enshrined as the Son of Heaven by the princes, Shennong regretted turning around and fighting to regain the position of The Son of Heaven?
