Lake Maracaibo is located in the northwest of Venezuela, with an area of 14,300 square kilometers, connected to the Gulf of Venezuela through a waterway 35 kilometers long and 3~12 kilometers wide, and is the largest lake in Venezuela and the largest lake in South America (the largest lake in Latin America). The Lake Maracaibo region is one of the richest and most concentrated oil-producing areas in the world, making it a world-famous oil lake.

At the mouth of the lake, the General Urtaneta Bridge was built to connect the two banks.
