Mount Merrow National Park faces a number of social and sustainability challenges

One: the geographical and geological features of Mount Meroe

Mount Mero is an active volcano in Tanzania with a height of about 4,566 meters, located about 70 kilometers southeast of the city of Arusha, and is one of the five highest peaks in Africa.

Location and altitude

Mount Mero is located within Mount Mero National Park in northern Tanzania and is made up of three cloaked rocks: andesite, rhyolite and granite. The summit is covered with snow and is also home to one of the largest eruption vents in the world.

Geological composition and tectonics

Mount Mero is also a unique treasure trove of rare human traces and the integration of the natural world, covering a relatively large number of microbial communities in its water bodies, jungles and valleys, with a total of more than 4,000 different types of flora and fauna, featuring 18% of the rare native animals Joe egrets and Javanese wildebeest, as well as more than 1,300 species of flora and fauna adapted to the highland environment.

Geolandscape analysis

The main peak of Mount Meroe is a volcanic cone composed of andesite, rhyolite and granite. The pre-primitive rock layer graben oscillation at its base is related to the active structure.

Two: Mount Meroe is rich in natural environment and biodiversity

Climate of Mount Meroe: The climate type of Mount Mero is subtropical alpine climate, with an average annual temperature of around 17°C, while the summit is covered with snow and ice all year round, with large variations in the mountainside part, with the highest rainfall between November and April each year.

Vegetation of Mount Meroe: The vegetation of Mount Meroe consists of low-altitude rainforest, mid-altitude savannah, coniferous forest, and high-altitude alpine broadleaf forest. The trees on Mount Mero grow spectacularly, often reaching 45 meters, and the rest are also weeds, flowers and other unique terrestrial plants.

Wildlife of Mount Meroe: Mount Mero National Park protects many unique and rare wildlife, including chimpanzees, Nile crocodiles, bowhead whales, yellow-spotted hyenas and Matawalu wild horses. There are also very representative Cerberas kangaroos, Chinormotug lizards and yellow-haired southern pikas.

Mount Meroe protects a rich and diverse biome, including many endemic and rare species in Africa. Although these flora and fauna still face habitat loss and other threats, the conservation of Mount Mero National Park has been continuously promoted and intensified with the aim of sustainably managing the natural resources of the area and ensuring a balance between their conservation and use, thus guaranteeing the prosperity and development of these lives.

Mount Meroe attracts a large number of tourists with its beautiful natural scenery and rare flora and fauna. The development of tourism has had a cultural, environmental and economic impact on the region.

Three: on the development and impact of tourism in Mount Meroe

Tourism resources and development history: With the increase of tourism demand, Mount Merrow National Park continues to develop and improve, adding new tourist routes, accommodation facilities, etc., to better meet the needs of tourists and improve the tourist experience.

Passenger traffic, economic benefits and their impact: The tourism economy in Mero's very active economy has contributed significantly to the local economic development and has made an important contribution to the improvement of the livelihoods of the local population. At the same time, with the increasing number of tourists, some problems have also emerged, such as tourism, environmental pollution and ecological damage.

Sustainable Management Strategies: To address these issues, Mount Merrow National Park has adopted a number of sustainability management strategies, such as limiting visitor numbers, encouraging visitors to participate in conservation, providing environmental education, and supporting local communities to take full advantage of tourism. These strategies ensure the sustainable development and conservation of tourism in Mero.

With the development of tourism in Meroe Hill, several social and sustainability issues have also arisen.

Fourth: Detailed introduction to social and sustainable development issues

Management and policy formulation: The management and supervision of Mount Merrow National Park should be strengthened to ensure that it fully considers environmental and social impacts while developing tourism, and that relevant policies are rationally formulated to regulate the development of tourism.

Community Engagement and Livelihood Improvement: To make local people more affordable, Mount Merrow National Park should increase local incomes, create more jobs, and take advantage of the flow of people and logistics that tourism brings through the development of local tourism. At the same time, local residents are encouraged to participate in ecological protection activities, so that they can become the beneficiaries of win-win tourism cooperation.

Sustainable development and environmental protection challenges: While ensuring the sustainable development of tourism in Mero, it is also necessary to focus on the preservation of its unique natural and cultural heritage. Appropriate management mechanisms and systems should be established to prevent and control potential environmental pollution, wildlife poaching, illegal reclamation and other problems to ensure the long-term protection and development of Mount Meroe.

The author believes that:

As an important treasure trove for tourism, Mount Merrow National Park is also a vibrant, culturally and environmentally diverse region, despite some social and sustainability challenges. Through active exploration, opportunities and win-win situations can be created in the process, and a balance between sustainable, economic and social development of tourism can be achieved.
