The annual Homecoming World Uk is an annual event and is the largest gathering of fanciers in the UK. It was a two-day event held in Blackpool in January. Whether you're a new member curious about pigeons or a veteran fancier, there's something for everyone at the show. From trade stands, various groups and organisations, lectures, films, young fancier zones to the main events (presentations and judging of thousands of top pigeons in the UK). What's more, it's a great opportunity for fanciers to meet.
The Blackpool Fair is one of the largest in the world, attracting around 25,000 visitors on a regular basis. It is held every year on the third weekend of January. We know it's the busiest weekend of the year in Blackpool, with hoteliers, restaurants, taxi drivers and shop advocates welcoming fanciers and their families with open arms. Because it's really a family activity.
Fanciers can buy anything in around 200 trade stalls, from a mahogany loft worth £25,000 to a bag of corn. Thousands of pigeons change hands at sales and auctions, and a thoroughbred pigeon or its descendants can be bought for between £100,000 and £10,000.
Of course, there is a serious side to this exhibition, which can be called "Crufts of the Pigeon World". There are around 2,500 pigeons on display, and they are all trying to win the best exhibition, and the winner will go to the highest level of the first prize. To be in this class, your pigeons must have won at the Pigeon Show in the last 12 months. Winning at Blackpool has a lot of accolades, as well as for any fancier who is invited to be a judge – it's a great honour for them.
When all the hard work is done, all the profits from the show are donated to various charities. Each year, the exhibition provides considerable funding to the British Pigeon Lung Research Team, enabling them to conduct research on this respiratory disease. We are also now also the largest single donor to ASBAH, with over £440,000 donated!
Over the past 15 years, Helping the Elderly has received £250,000 in donations. There are now 29 minibuses travelling across the UK, each bearing the show logo. The remaining money is allocated to charities, including many cancer charities and hospice organizations.
