A team of researchers from Nagoya University has discovered three new bioluminescent marine worms (link animals) in shallow coastal waters in different parts of Japan, of which Polycirrus onibi (Figure 1) is named after a creature from Japanese folklore. Bioluminescence is a biocommunication behavior, an interesting and unusual biochemical treasure trove with about 7,000 known bioluminescent organisms on Earth. (The scale bar in the picture is 5 mm)
