Note: In the first year of the Northern Song Dynasty (1101 AD), Su Dongpo returned from Hainan Island and lived in Yangxian (present-day Yixing, Jiangsu). There was a reader Shao Minzhan who studied with Dongpo as a teacher, and Dongpo liked Shao Minzhan very much, and often walked across the long bridge with him on crutches and played in the mountains and rivers.
Shao Minzhan bought a house for Dongpo for a price of five hundred taels, and spent all the savings of Dongpo at that time. On the night after moving into the new house on the auspicious day, Dongpo and Minzhan walked in the moonlight, and when they did not realize that they had arrived in a village, they heard an old woman crying very sadly. Dongpo listened closely and thought, "Strange, why is this woman crying so sadly?" I'm going to ask her. ”
Dongpo pushed the door in, and the old woman continued to cry when she saw it. Dongpo asked her why she was crying with grief? The old woman said, "I have a house that has been passed down from generation to generation for nearly two hundred years, and because my son was not mature, he sold the house to someone else, so I had to move here, remembering that the house I was used to living in would never be there, how can I not be sad?!" After careful inquiry by Dongpo, he knew that the house he bought was the old woman's old house.
When Dongpo learned the truth of the matter, he cordially comforted the old woman and said, "I bought your house, don't be sad, now I will return the house to you." He then asked someone to take the voucher for buying a house and burn it in front of the old woman. The next day, the old woman's son was asked to take his mother back to the ancestral house to live, and he did not ask for the five hundred taels of money to buy the house. Dongpo returned to Changzhou and no longer bought a house, but borrowed the residence of the Sun family in Tangqiao to live temporarily.
