Niue, located in the South Pacific Ocean, 170 degrees west longitude, 19 degrees south latitude, east of the South Pacific International Date Line, belongs to the Polynesian Islands. Niue is the second largest rising atoll-shaped coral reef in the world and is known as the "Reef of Polynesia".

It is 2600 km from Auckland, New Zealand. It is about 550 km north of Samoa, 269 km east of Tonga Tonga in the west and 900 km east of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

The country has a land area of 260 square kilometers and has a tropical maritime climate.

History

Polynesians settled here more than 1,000 years ago.

The island of Niue was discovered by the British in 1774.

It became a British "protectorate" in 1900.

It became part of New Zealand in 1901 as part of the Cook Islands.

A separate administrative structure was established in 1904.

Home self-government was introduced in 1974 and free association with New Zealand was maintained.

The Government of Niue enjoys full executive and legislative power, and Niue people enjoy dual citizenship of Niue and New Zealand.
