ELLE interviewed Ms. Wang Siyuan, founder of MAXRIENY, at the event, and talked with her about the establishment of the brand, the design inspiration of this season's collection, personal development experience and other topics.
ELLE: I see that you used to be a master of finance and then did fashion. What made you think about getting into the fashion industry?
SARA Wang Siyuan: I think it's because of my love for fashion. Because finance is a very rational and rigorous job, I lack the enthusiasm for life and exploring more talents.
Later, after I finished my master's degree in finance at the University of Melbourne, I happened to have a gap period. My husband had more than a year to study at that time, so I went to study fashion design. After that, I felt like I really opened up another world of my own because it was so imaginative. It combines aesthetics and is very landable. You'll be able to see what your design looks like when it's realized. So when we returned to China, we decided to do this business. My family used to make clothing, and after I came back, I continued to decide that the two of us would do more entrepreneurship in terms of clothing and do what we wanted to do.
ELLE: This is the first show after the pandemic, will there be any special displays? Is such a message reflected in the content of the show?
SARA Wang Siyuan: The theme of this season "My heart is a kaleidoscope", at that time, in the concept of kaleidoscope, I think it moved me the most because it was a toy from our childhood, and at that time, after my daughter took it home, she said, "Mom, you look very fun", and then I suddenly thought that I played with it when I was a child, and now I don't seem to have played with this toy when I grow up, and suddenly I feel very interesting.
On the one hand, it is a memory of our childhood, and on the other hand, if our mind can see the world like a kaleidoscope, the world you see will become different according to the perspective. It can turn, it can be ever-changing, so it inspired me a lot.
We have experienced the epidemic for three years, and all the things that we have experienced in life, it is like a kaleidoscope, made up of this petal inside, it is actually not good or bad, and all the things it combines together, when you turn it, it will form a completely unique change. So for me, I think it's also a hope that we can look at the world with a kaleidoscope of hearts, and there will be a lot of unexpected ideas.
ELLE: How did you first come up with the concept of healing love? I noticed that the founders are husband and wife, why did I think of the word "healing"?
SARA Wang Siyuan: Because we are husband and wife, in fact, before we both started a brand together, we were our first love in junior high school. But my husband due to some reasons in his previous family, his parents divorced, some changes, so for him, there are actually some psychological obstacles. He wrote a novel about the love story between the two of us. LATER, WHEN WE CAME BACK TO START OUR BUSINESS, WE GAVE MAXRIENY SUCH A FAIRY TALE.
At the end of this story, you can see 4 illustrations that we created in collaboration with the artist. They are telling the original intention of the brand: we hope to explore ourselves more courageously, but also to create a possibility for the future, with a braver heart. All previous experiences, all previous childhood imprints, or past misfortunes, if we can face it together, together with courage and more love and tolerance to cross it, we can create our own future world. So with this part, when we start a business together, the dedication to the career, including in this process, we go to work running-in, how to understand each other better, how can we not lose ourselves and can achieve him, but also achieve themselves. We have grown a lot in the process.
ELLE: How do you show your love for fairy tales in your designs? Is it inspired by a specific fairy tale, or is it based on materials, concepts, and colors?
SARA Wang Siyuan: In the earliest days, we would have originated from "Alice in Wonderland" or a theme that I extracted from dreams, or a fairy tale that we created. But now I don't start from a more tangible story, but from my own inner and recent fashion trends to create a more holistic representation. It is no longer a figurative thing, it is more abstract and artistic.
ELLE: Seeing that the color use this time is romantic purple and cool black, is there a special purpose for this contrast?
SARA Wang Siyuan: Because "My Heart is a Kaleidoscope" it has an English part, the best of light and dark, the best light and dark. The contrast between light and dark produces the richest changes in the world.
Whether you like the good or the bad, or whether you prefer the bright or the dark, it's all the best. So in black products it will be cool, we will also have a kaleidoscope of flowers, with the recreation of this pattern part, can also present this flower in the form of a kaleidoscope. There are also a variety of some of the more popular colors of Y2K to present this season. We hope that this collection will make everyone feel that the future is a colorful world with a kaleidoscopic heart.
ELLE: What kind of girls do you think your brand's clothes will attract? Why?
SARA Wang Siyuan: Through communicating with many VIPs, I think they all have a commonality, they all resonate with the brand. What we've been talking about is gentle power—a very gentle and romantic, feminine-looking woman, but in fact she is a very self-insistent, self-pioneering and capable woman inside. And they are relatively high in education. So I feel very proud that they can not only maintain the exquisite romance of women, but also have their own independent ability to create and contribute their own value, including running their own family.
ELLE: How do you interpret the brand slogan "to make your sophistication unique"?
SARA Wang Siyuan: This is also what I think the most important thing that the brand can bring to customers, and what we have to insist on, one is refinement, the other is different.
I think it is more representative of our lifestyle. For example, when you go downstairs to take out the garbage, you have to dress very delicately, and I think the real sophistication is because you take your state seriously. Everyone is a group of women who love life very much, because only people who really love life will be so exquisite about every moment and minute of their life. We make brands, and what our clothing can provide is also this exquisite attitude to life. The details of the garment are different. In addition, refinement is also a pursuit of values, we continue to combine more popular things to create, so that every woman can become a more unique existence. That spirit falls into our designs and the value we provide to our customers. That's what makes us different from other brands.
